Javon Kullum and Jose Santiago, both 12, and Antoine Sharpe and Kamron Jackson, both 11, huddled around a table in a Chaney Campus classroom, hard at work.

They are among 40 middle-school students in the Invention Project, a program for sixth-through-eighth-graders by Camp Invention, the National Inventors Hall of Fame in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark offices.

The camp for incoming Chaney Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program students ran this week at the school.

One group of students worked on Change Agent, to design a medicine delivery system, while next door, students worked in Holo-Games, where students developed game storylines and prototype avatars for video games.

The boys, all incoming sixth-graders, worked in Change Agent.

Grant passed to protect fish habitat, Leech Lake Watershed

June 17, 2016 9:30 pm Published by

The Legacy Bill was passed on the last day of the 2016 Minnesota legislative session and included an appropriation of $1.425 million to the Leech Lake Watershed Foundation and the Minnesota Land Trust to protect fish habitat in cold water lakes, according to a press release from the Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation.

Lindsey Ketchel, Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation executive director, proposed the grant which “supports targeted efforts to protect an additional 600 acres of critical shorelands and diverse forest habitat in Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing and Hubbard Counties through a fee title acquisition in Ponto Lake Township of Cass County and permanent conservation easements.”

Focus of the Outdoor Heritage Grant

Tullibee, also known as cisco, are an important forage fish for walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, and lake trout. Deep, cold-water tullibee lakes with high quality, well-oxygenated waters and natural, undisturbed land cover and shorelines will offer the best chance for tullibee and other fish populations to survive these threats.

There are 68 cold water lakes considered “refuge lakes” for tullibee in Minnesota and 38 of these are found in the grant’s four-county target area. These north central Minnesota lakes attract people nationwide for their natural states, beauty, fishing, and other outdoor recreational opportunities.

How cold water lakes are protected

A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that drains off of it goes into the same place a river, stream or lake. If a lake’s watershed has less than 25 percent land disturbance and 75 percent or more of its landscape remains forested and permanently protected, the lake has a high probability of sustaining clean water and a healthy lake ecosystem to support fish.”

This Outdoor Heritage Grant will be used for a 200-acre fee title acquisition to expand state forest land and conservation easements on 400 acres of private land all benefitting 38 tullibee refuge lakes and their watersheds.

How to obtain more information on conservation easements

Conservation easements are individually tailored agreements through which landowners voluntarily limit the use and development of their property to permanently preserve its natural or scenic features.

These “conservation values” may include wildlife and plant habitat, lake or river shoreline, or wetlands.

“Landowners may choose to donate or sell a conservation easement.

Groundbreaking Tuesday for new Wanakena Footbridge; community rallies to raise enough funds

WANAKENA The future of the Wanakena Footbridge is looking bright, thanks to a groundswell of community support for replacing the former century-old span over the Oswegatchie River.

A groundbreaking ceremony for a new, wooden bridge is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. The town of Fine owns the bridge and all of the replacement funding came from grants and donations, large and small.

“Many, many volunteers hold this bridge near and dear to their heart and said ‘we’re going to raise the money we need to build this project’,” Mrs. “A town this size with a budget of just under $2 million does not have general fund money available for a project of this magnitude.”

The new bridge will be installed 2.5 feet higher than the existing bridge in hopes of preventing water or ice damage from happening again.

“That’s our best safeguard against further damage,” Mrs. The approaches will be wooden ramps that will accommodate people who can’t navigate stairs.

The Wanakena Historical Association took the lead on fundraising, which ranged from an ongoing can and bottle drive to hosting a bridge day event that raised about $9,000 the first year and $23,000 last year. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency and the Northern New York Community Foundation.

The historical group is continuing to seek contributions for ongoing bridge maintenance and unexpected costs that may arise during reconstruction. Westbrook, president of the Clifton-Fine Economic Development Corp., said making the rebuilding project a reality is a true success story.

“This is a real big deal for our small community,” he said.

Tax-deductible donations can be made on the Wanakena Historical Association’s website at http://wanakena.webs.com/ or by mailing to the association at P.O.

MIAMI COUNTY Miami County Public Health (MCPH) announced that it has been awarded $5,000 in grant funding from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) to re-establish a mosquito surveillance and education program. This grant will allow MCPH to perform mosquito surveillance, create educational material, purchase larval control products, and mosquito repellent.

Mosquito surveillance will be done with specialized traps that collect mosquitoes. Since Zika poses a risk of serious birth defects, these items can be provided to clients in the pre-natal clinic, reproductive health clinic, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clients, as well as travel vaccination participants.

“These funds will help us monitor mosquito activity in Miami County as well as educate the public on how to protect themselves and their families from mosquito related diseases such as Zika,” said Dennis Propes, health commissioner, Miami County Public Health.
