Americans Embrace Philanthropy At Record Setting Level

June 14, 2016 10:15 pm Published by

Donations and contributions by Americans reached record setting levels for the second year in succession, as revealed in a report from the Giving USA Foundation and Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

The report shows that charitable donations and giving totals recorded in 2015 reached as much as $373.25 billion, an increase of 4 percent from 2014.

Keith Curtis, president of The Curtis Group and chairman of the Giving USA Foundation, highlighted that “Americans are embracing philanthropy at a higher level than ever before.”

“If you look at total giving by two-year time spans, the combined growth for 2014 and 2015 hit double digits, reaching 10.1 percent when calculated using inflation-adjusted dollars.”

Contributions made by individuals were the largest in terms of dollar amount amounting to $264.58 billion.

Giving USA notes the largest year over year percentage increase in contributions from sources came through grants from American foundations upping by 6.5 percent in current dollars and 6.3 percent when inflation adjusted.

“Each year, gifts of $100 million or more play a significant role for some individual donors and many different types of charities, and they do affect the numbers,” Patrick Rooney, associate dean for academic affairs and research at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, said in a statement.

“Philanthropy is quite democratic and always has been more people give than vote in the U.S. While the GDP rose by 2.4 percent in the last two years, donations saw a surge of 4.1 percent last year and 7.8 percent the year before.

Program targets underserved youth

The Owensboro Family YMCA is partnering with Estes Elementary School this summer to curb academic achievement gaps with literacy, enrichment and family engagement activities.

The program, dubbed Summer Learning Loss Prevention, was funded by a $13,500 YMCA of the USA startup grant this year, and officials with the youth development organization visited the school on Owensboro’s east end earlier this week to track development and implementation.

The summer learning project, underway in about 120 communities nationwide, targets underserved and impoverished areas by fostering partnerships between Title I-funded schools and local YMCA chapters.

Kelly Wise is a technical adviser for YMCA of the USA.

Many Estes Elementary School parents and guardians live in low-income housing, Jewell said.

Social enterprise accelerator One10 enters Sydney

June 14, 2016 9:52 pm Published by

In a time of worsening social inequality, exclusion, and under-representation of cultural minorities, this is unsurprising.

“An increasing number of people are turning to business solutions that tackle society’s biggest challenges, and with this shift comes a great need for specialised support systems and infrastructure for the purpose driven enterprise, nonprofit and social impact sectors.”

What exactly does One10 do?

One10 is creating an ecosystem for people pursuing business solutions to environmental and societal problems. It takes participants through a tailored 12 week program, which establishes and refines all aspects of the business, to ready it for both investment and success.

With a focus on investment readiness, a highly flexible roadmap, and an impact driven mandate, this program is tailored to the needs of individual social enterprises and their teams, ensuring that no time or resources are wasted. Once participants have completed the program, One10 provides ongoing support to raise capital, and continues to share expertise with program alumni throughout the year after they have completed the program.

The launch of the Sydney office perfectly coincides with Promise or Pay (a Sydney based social enterprise) joining One10’s social accelerator program. “We’re really excited to have Promise or Pay on board, they’re a fantastic enterprise with huge potential for scale exactly the type of enterprise we look to take into the accelerator” said Geoff.

One10 is always open for pitch applications so if you have a social enterprise head to the website and pitch your business.

City’s grant to Young Voices could be shifted

PAWTUCKET Though school officials say they’re cutting ties with student advocacy organization Young Voices over an unauthorized student survey at Tolman High School, a new city grant approved for the organization this year is still in limbo.

Ed Soares, manager for Pawtucket’s Community Development Block Grant program, said Monday that Young Voices applied for and was set to receive a new $15,000 grant “to continue to implement their youth leadership training programming at Tolman and expand their role and presence at Shea (High School).”

The city’s entire CDBG funding recommendation has been submitted to the U.S. Young Voices received about $22,000 from the school department over four years of conducting a program designed to give students a voice in their education.
