Dr Paul Blatchford awarded Emerging Researcher
Grant

Dr Paul Blatchford has been awarded an
Emerging Researcher Grant by the Health Research Council of
New Zealand (HRC) to examine how bacteria and microorganisms
in the gut may be improved using enteral nutrition and
curcumin, a bright yellow naturally occurring plant
compound.

Dr Blatchford’s two-year project, in
collaboration with Gastroenterologist Professor Andrew Day
of the University of Otago and Christchurch Hospital, is
titled “Improving gut microbiota in Inflammatory Bowel
Disease (IBD) patients using enteral nutrition and
curcumin”.

“Gut microbiota is the name given to the
microbial population living in our intestine. With this research we’re looking at how a
nutritional intervention might help people with Crohn’s
disease.”

The main objective of this study is to use
advanced laboratory gut models to investigate the potential
of different combinations of enteral formula and curcumin
for correcting the gut microbiota of Crohn’s disease
patients and ultimately helping alleviate the symptoms of
IBD.

Dr Blatchford is part of Plant & Food Research’s
Food Nutrition & Health Group and while only graduating with
a PhD last year, possesses over 10 years’ professional
experience in several related fields including Medical
microbiology; Quality control; Drug discovery; Development
and microbial ecology. They study the impact of food on
human health – glycaemic impact, metabolic health, nutrient
bioavailability, immunity, and the biochemical signalling
taking place between the gastrointestinal tract and the
nervous system (gut-brain axis) involving intestinal
microbiota which are thought to play an important role in
healthy brain function.

benefits of plant- and sea-based foods and derived
compounds, to support existing products and prototype
functional foods and ingredients.. More>>

Prince: The philanthropist

Prince: The activist

Ultimately, documenting all of Prince’s philanthropy is probably impossible, at least without a public accounting from his estate.

Education: Mastery School

In 1993 Prince donated $200,000 to the Harvest Network of Schools. The group is made up of about 1,300 charter school students, mostly poor and black.

Prince’s gift helped fund Harvest’s purchase and renovation of a former nursing home on Olson Memorial Highway in north Minneapolis.

Shelter: Bridge for Youth

About a decade ago, Prince gave $23,000 to The Bridge for Youth, which serves runaway and homeless youth.

“He just loved children like this and valued them and tasked us with the with the great honor and responsibility to spend that money wisely,” said Matthew Costello, Promise Zone executive director.

Michael Kors and ‘Hamilton’ Actor Leslie Odom Jr. Talk Charity at Town & Country Philanthropy …

Michael Kors and ‘Hamilton’ Actor Leslie Odom Jr.
“I want to meet them because we’ll be working together, and the talent is extraordinary.”

Later in the day, designer Michael Kors addressed an issue close to his heart on a panel called: “The Hunger Crisis: Are We Making Progress.”

“I’m interested in results,” said Kors, who first got his start fighting hunger at God’s Love We Deliver, where his contributions helped rebuild and expand their Greenwich Village headquarters and then with the World Food Programme, where proceeds from his Watch Hunger Stop campaign have helped feed more than 10 million schoolchildren.

As far as meal preparation, Kors’ competitive streak often comes into play. “You can be competitive in philanthropy,” he said.

Blaine Trump, lifetime vice chairman of the board of directors of God’s Love We Deliver, said the organization has started freezing meals since so many of their clients have doctor’s appointments and other things they need to tend to.

“Most of our meals are frozen and they can have a warm meal when they’re ready,” said Trump, noting that in June, God’s Love will deliver its 18 millionth meal.

When moderator Alina Cho asked whether zero hunger is achievable in our lifetime, Elisabeth Rasmusson, assistant executive director of the World Food Programme, said, “Absolutely.

Scotland’s social investment market: a snapshot

May 10, 2016 3:52 am Published by

Just like many other industries and sectors, the worlds of social enterprise and social investment are often criticised for being London-centric and too focussed on the south east of England. An estimated 3,500 social enterprises are playing a greater role in the Scottish economy and the sector enjoys enthusiastic government support, particularly from deputy first minister John Swinney.

Social Investment Scotland (SIS) has made almost 300 social investments to support the growth of this sector totalling just under 50m since being set up in 2001. The scale of this investment activity is impressive when compared to some of our contemporaries in England, particularly given the more limited geography.

Social enterprises in Scotland contribute 6.9bn to the economy, more lucrative than the entire third sector

There are a number of factors that underpin this success, not least the investment and support ecosystem that supports the social enterprise movement in all its forms. The 32m Scottish Investment Fund, now fully invested by SIS on behalf of the Scottish Government, has catalysed the maturity of the social investment sector, helping to foster and maintain a strong pipeline of investment opportunities.

SIS does, however, have access to interventions that apply UK-wide. In doing so, I’m confident that Scotland can provide a leading example to other countries and economies of a comparable size and character.

Impact investing is all about putting your money where your values are

Impact investing: Put your money where your values are

This altruistic interest is being reflected in the fast-growing socially responsible investing universe, which has evolved from primarily positive or negative screening of investments to also include so-called impact investments.

While there are many interpretations of the term impact investing, it can be summed up as investing for measurable and positive environmental, social or governmental (ESG) outcomes with a financial return.

Long available to institutions, impact investing vehicles are just starting to emerge for the non-accredited investor.

According to Sonia Kowal, president of registered investment advisor and asset manager Zevin Asset Management, “impact investing adds a layer of intentionality and a proactive approach to the investment.”

For advisors interested in learning more about SRI generally and impact investing specifically, Shane Yonston, principal advisor with Impact Investors, recommends several resources as starting points:

Impact investment products for non-accredited investors have been emerging in recent years:

But the forces that need to be in play to render impact investing mainstream are starting to come into play, Nelund noted.
