Community Foundation of Collier steps up – again

March 29, 2016 2:56 am Published by

Sharing is caring, and the Community Foundation of Collier County does plenty of both.

Most recently, the foundation granted $15,000 to Collier Child Care Resources from the Alfred and Vera Goodman Fund.

CCCR Executive Director Niccole Howard said the funds would provide partial tuition assistance for lower-income families whose children are enrolled at the NCEF Early Childhood Education Center, operated by CCCR. The Community Foundation of Collier County also awarded grants to Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, Champions for Learning and New Horizons of Southwest Florida.

Located on the Collier campus of Florida SouthWestern State College, Howard said tuition costs at the NCEF Early Childhood Education Center could run more than $10,000 a year.

In 2015, The center’s early childhood development program achieved reaccreditation from the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education. Those centers focus on the children of teen mothers by offering free child care and parenting classes while their moms continue their high school educations.

“This allows for a better future for them and their children, without the worry of needing to pay for child care,” said Dianne Reed, CCCR’s director of communications.

Additionally, CCCR conducts an early childhood education conference once a year to go along with training workshops for early learning professionals throughout the year.

In 2014, the nonprofit served more than 1,750 people with training and educational resources.

New Broward Health CEO focuses on care, not politics

March 29, 2016 2:56 am Published by

The new interim chief executive officer of Broward Health said Tuesday her priorities for fixing the troubled public hospital system include a focus on patient care, fixing a backlog in physicians contracts and employee morale.

Pauline Grant, who was appointed March 16, said in an interview she didn’t want to discuss the politics swirling around the district, with Gov. Louis Yogel, chief of staff at Broward Health Medical Center, said the hospital was at risk of lacking specialists to handle trauma patients and said “patient care at Broward Health is hanging by a thread.”

I love Broward Health. Broward Health has been good to me, and I feel it’s important to give back to Broward Health. Pauline Grant, interim CEO, Broward Health

Grant said she spoke this week with Yogel and that the doctors’ contracts at that hospital should be wrapped up in a matter of weeks.

“We have the assurance that those doctors will have their contracts,” she said.

Homicide is the fifth leading cause of death for African-American men of all ages, according to the CDC.

For those between 15 and 34, it’s No. 1.

Typically, the issue of violence against black men comes up in the context of criminal justice, but some community leaders are pushing for a public health approach to the issue.

This isn’t a new idea it began in the 1980s but the Center for Healthy African American Men through Partnerships recently held a forum on the subject: “Reducing Violence against African-American Males.”

MPR News host Tom Weber moderated a panel at the forum with Deborah Prothrow-Stith, a professor at Harvard’s School of Public Health; Brett Grant, director of policy and research for Voices for Racial Justice; Gretchen Musicant, health commissioner for the city of Minneapolis; and William Blair Anderson, chief of police for the city of St.

Settlement services co-ordinator Tamara Hoogerdyk and Michael VanDerHerberg talks to participants during one of two workshop sessions aimed at helping sponsorship groups who are sponsoring refugee families to plan what needs to be done before, when and after the family arrives held on Friday November 13, 2015 at the New Canadians Centre in Peterborough, Ont.

The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough has announced two grants worth a total of $42,000 to help Syrian refugee settlement in the Peterborough community.

The presentations were scheduled to be made Tuesday night during a workshop being hosted by the New Canadians Centre for community volunteers who are providing support for the government-assisted refugees slated to arrive in Peterborough starting in April.

The Community Foundations of Canada’s Welcome Fund for Syrian Refugees is providing $15,000 in funding to Peterborough’s Community Counselling and Resource Centre’s Housing Resource Centre to establish a Housing Stabilization Fund for Government Assisted Refugees to help refugees overcome financial barriers to finding suitable housing.

The Welcome Fund for Syrian Refugees at Community Foundations of Canada was established with funding from Manulife, $5 million from CN and further donations by businesses including GM.

Another $27,000 from Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough donor advised funds will go to the New Canadians Centre to assist with salaries and expenses associated with refugee settlement, particularly the support for volunteer committees sponsoring families, the committees supporting government assisted refugees and Peterborough’s Refugee Resettlement Task Force.

This grant is being made through donations provided by the Kamerin Fund and from the Linda and Alan Slavin Fund donor-advised funds invested and managed by the foundation.

CFGP is a public foundation and registered charity that brings donors to the table as community builders, working closely with them to align their philanthropic vision with the community’s needs and pooling the charitable gifts of donors to create perpetual endowment funds and use the investment income to make grants to charities in Peterborough city and county.

Government to review roles of Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund | Third Sector

The government has announced that it will carry out reviews of the grant-makers Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The paper sets out what the government says is the first strategy for arts and culture in more than 50 years and includes a new expectation from government that all publicly funded arts organisations must improve access for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The paper, announced by Ed Vaizey, the culture minister, says “arts organisations that receive public money must show they are reaching out and increasing access for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to help find the stars of tomorrow and open arts and culture up for all”.

The museums review will “consider big questions around the national infrastructure, including the roles of government, Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund in nurturing the sector”.

The paper says the government will introduce the new Great Place Scheme, which will “bring national arts and heritage lottery funders together to make culture a core part of local authority plans and policies”.

Founder of Mazi Mas Nicki Kopcke warns social entrepreneurs about the impact of burnout and urges her peers to seek out opportunities to include each other in their supply chains at the NatWest SE100 Insight event in London.

The first NatWest SE100 Insight event of 2016 saw a smorgasbord of speakers from across the social enterprise spectrum deliver a mix of essential information and honest anecdotes for and from an audience of social entrepreneurs.

Nicki Kopcke (pictured above), founder of Mazi Mas, told the compelling story of her social enterprise, which ultimately seeks to empower women to use their culinary skills to start their own business. Mazi Mas was inspired by her godmother, who was denied a similar opportunity due to education, language and her husband’s expectations after emigrating from Greece to the US.

The social enterprise has engaged migrant women from many different countries to cater in pop-up restaurants, and there will soon now be a permanent venue for Mazi Mas as it seeks to move the model to the next stage.

Why has Kopcke sought to create this business? I burn out every few months and that hurts our business, rather than benefits it.”

We should have each other in our supply chains; we should all be trying to buy from social enterprises

She went on to urge her fellow social entrepreneurs to buy from each other wherever possible: “We are businesses after all. To find out more about signing your venture up to the Index, click here.
