Liberal government has prepared a buffet of arts funding. Will Northern Ontario dig in?

March 27, 2016 11:11 pm Published by

Even as the Liberal Government has increased arts funding in the federal budget, a local artist says many don’t apply for the grant money earmarked for Northern Ontario arts.

Rihkee Strapp is a Sault-based multidisciplinary artist who has had some success in recent years applying for grant money made available to Canadian artists.

Marie and District, is hopeful the increase in arts funding will mean more opportunities for local artists, like Strapp.

Grants are available for emerging and long-practicing artists in many disciplines, including visual art, performing art and literature.

FedNor and Ontario Arts Council also offer grants specific to Northern Ontario artists.

Sandra Houston, who spent almost 50 years volunteering with the arts council, said she has assisted many local artists in writing successful grants over the years.

Strapp wonders how the arts council, which transitioned through three executive directors in less than a year, will be capable of supporting the artists in need of assistance.

Raven hopes an increase in arts funding will mean the council will be successful in their attempts to gain seed funding.

FIJI uses arts and auction to raise money for suicide prevention

March 27, 2016 10:26 pm Published by

Last Thursday evening, the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta began a new tradition by integrating the arts into their philanthropic endeavors.

On March 24,the fraternity, commonly known as Fiji, hosted its first-everperforming arts showcase and silent auction at their chapter house. The show, which was organized by students and hosted by Philanthropy Chair and College juniorGrant Kleiser, witnessed an audience of around 200 people.

Proceeds from the silent auction went to the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. It had been two years since Fijivoted on making this their chapter’s philanthropic organization of choice.

“A lot of people have had friends who have suffered through mental crises and struggled with suicidal thoughts,” Kleiser said.”We thought it was a very important thing, especially at Penn, to support and to show that we care about these people.

The performing arts idea emerged from the desire to put more creative thought into event planning.

College senior and Fiji President Ryan Anderson a member of The Daily Pennsylvanian opinion board said that when he began his term, “we had been searching for a few years for more creative events, to ramp up the events, organize bigger showingsand involve bigger organizations.”

Their community service dedication is expected to continue with a park cleanupscheduled for this week.

“We have a big community service event and a big philanthropy event every semester,” Kleiser said. “We want this to be something the brothers support wholeheartedly.”

With the intention of making this event a new Fijitradition, the brothers encouraged students to look forward to next year’s showcase as well as emphasize their new initiative to opening their space for fraternities, organizations and non-Penn affiliated organizations to utilize.

“Be on the lookout for us making this a real tradition and establishing this as a presence on Penn’s campus,” Anderson said.
