Spring has sprung upon Chino Hills, offering trail lovers green hills and spectacular sunsets. Seltzer, chairman of the Chino Hills parks and recreation commission, serves on a trails ad-hoc committee with fellow commissioner Bill Taylor, a foundation member.

Taylor said the money can be used for enhancements spread out over the 39 miles of trails, enhancements to specific trails, or could be concentrated at the La Sierra Trail on La Sierra and Monteverde drives south of Chino Avenue.

Xiara Vasquez, 17, who walks the La Sierra Trail and several others, said she has seen a few hikers fall off trail edges.

Interested arts groups should send a letter requesting funds to the Purcellville Arts Council, outlining a program budget, the arts activity to be funded and the audiences(s) to be served, along with a description of the organization.

Shrock sees recent improvements in our communities that give her significant reason to believe 2018 will be better than 2016, and that 2020 will be better than 2018.

aCertainly in the last four years we have been trending up,a Shrock said from her office that looks out at the corner of Jackson and Mulberry streets in downtown Muncie.

Education natural extension of Stewart’s work

Stewart has been the president of the Community Foundation of Macon County for five years, but her career working with the community spans more than 30 years.

aA lot of what I have done has touched education along the way,a Stewart said.

She has worked for or been a board member for many community organizations, including Richland Community College Foundation, Decatur Memorial Hospital Foundation and other social service areas creating education opportunities for the homeless.

aThat all relies on the educational uplifting of the people and awareness on the community,a she said.

Stewart and her current foundation have have been a part of The Education Coalition of Macon County for eight years.

Benjamin’s Hope in Park Township has received a grant to help the nonprofit expand its community garden programming.The $3,500 grant from Fiskars’ Project Orange Thumb will be used to make the community garden wheelchair accessible and to build a greenhouse.”We’re hoping to expand with grants like this to invite more people in,” said Elissa Lappenga, director of community engagement.Benjamin’s Hope offers community-based solutions for adults living with autism.The community garden was started in 2013 and substantially expanded in 2014. Marine City officials might soon reconsider ties with a grant-writing and consulting firm that it has been paying $5,000 a monthA for more than two years.

The city first hired Novi-based Strategic Communications Solutions in fall 2013, primarily to help secure funding to refurbish the interior of the old city hall atA 300 Broadway St.

While the firm has secured some funding for projects in the community, none have been for the historic city hall.

The 19th-century building, designed by the Detroit architectural firm Mason and Rice, was dedicated in 1884.A The first part of the restoration project, exterior brick work, was completed in summer 2013.


UK will be celebrating its first national celebration of social enterprises dubbed as Social Saturday. World famous celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who founded the Fifteen restaurant chain.
