Marin cities and towns pledge money for homeless

May 8, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

A proposal to collect financial contributions from every city and town in Marin over the next three years to help pay for expanding the county’s winter shelter program has already won the support of six municipalities, the minimum deemed necessary to implement the plan.

Councils in Larkspur and Fairfax approved the scheme Wednesday.

The winter program is known as the “rotating emergency shelter team” or REST program because churches and synagogues take turns sheltering homeless men; homeless women are housed at the county’s Health and Wellness Campus in San Rafael. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County for the last seven years.

The Marin County Council of Mayors and Councilmembers is attempting to collect half of the needed funds, $180,000, from Marin’s 11 municipalities.

Three-year pledge

Cities and towns that join the effort commit to making the financial contribution for at least three years, but the mayors and council members’ council hopes to build an ongoing community homeless fund that can be used for additional future projects.

The council has said it expects the county of Marin and the Marin Community Foundation to jointly supply the other $180,000 needed to operate an expanded REST program this year.

Thomas Peters, president of the Marin Community Foundation, said that the foundation will contribute $250,000 to the program again this year.

“I’m happy to be the purveyor of good news,” Peters said.

The Community Homeless Fund has the support of the Marin Organizing Committee, a group of nonprofits and faith-based organizations that helped create the REST program. It asked all of Marin’s cities and towns to jointly foot 20 percent of the estimated $1.25 million cost; the committee had also hoped the county of Marin would contribute $500,000 and the Marin Community Foundation about $250,000.

She said creation of the Community Homeless Fund will “give us some breathing room to figure out what it’s really going to take to make this 24-7 shelter a reality.”

Colin said in the future the Community Homeless Fund might be used to help fund the creation of a 24-7 shelter; however, not during the three-year funding cycle that municipalities are now committing to.

“The 24-7 shelter concept really needs to be led by the county of Marin,” Colin said.

Conservancy makes deal to protect North Tonawanda wetlands – City & Region – The Buffalo News Conservancy makes deal to protect North Tonawanda wetlands

NORTH TONAWANDA The Western New York Land Conservancy announced Friday it has made an agreement with the Buffalo Audubon Society to protect most of the Klydel Wetlands in North Tonawanda.

The sides agreed to a conservation easement for about 28 acres of the 36-acre wetland zone owned by the Audubon Society, which officially calls it the North Tonawanda Audubon Nature Preserve. The Land Conservancy has been able to use conservation easements to protect some other parcels of land in the region.

“Klydel Wetlands is an incredibly important natural asset for everyone in North Tonawanda,” said Liz Kaszubski, founder of Citizens for a Green North Tonawanda, a community group that spearheaded efforts to create the preserve.

The site includes mature forests intermingled with seasonal pools and hosts numerous species of wildlife, including the small Eastern Screech Owl, which nests in tree cavities there. In short, protecting places like the Klydel Wetlands is an investment in the future of our region,” Smith said.

Another type of investment came in the form of grants to the conservancy this week by two local foundations, contributing to its $3.2 million plan to purchase land along the Niagara River in Lewiston from the Sisters of St. The Land Conservancy has now received more than $2.9 million of the more than $3.2 million needed to create the Stella Niagara Preserve.

In February, the conservancy received a $200,000 challenge gift from Pamela and Joe Priest of Lewiston, and when it is matched, the project’s fundraising goal will have been met, but the deadline is June 1, and more donations are being sought.
