Pizarro: Nonprofits hoping for another Silicon Valley Gives windfall – San Jose Mercury NewsPizarro: Nonprofits hoping for another Silicon Valley Gives windfall

You never know if a sequel is going to be a hit, but I’m sure nonprofits would love to see a strong second year of Silicon Valley Gives — a 24-hour donation campaign that raised $8 million last year, spread out among some 700 agencies.

SV Gives — again hosted by the Valley Community Foundation“>Silicon Valley Community Foundation and sponsored by Microsoft and others — will take place Tuesday between midnight and 11:59 p.m. There are even 50 San Francisco charities participating this year because of their ties to the Silicon Valley community.

The giving takes place online at svgives.org (and you can donate in advance, too), but the Community Foundation also will be hosting events at the Microsoft stores at Westfield Valley Fair and the Stanford Shopping Center, as well as Safeway stores at Rivermark Plaza in Santa Clara and Hamilton Avenue in San Jose.

Like last year, sponsors will be offering matching donations to amplify individual donations — for example, the Skill Foundation will provide first-come matches up to $50,000 each hour between 9 a.m.
