The Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties has approved a $13,270 grant to the Town of Middleburg that will go toward the new Dark Sky Lighting renovations along Washington Street.

The funds support a long-planned project within the village to upgrade sidewalks, cross-walks and improve the public lighting to adark skya standards spanning from The Plains Road to Liberty Street.

According to Town Manager Martha Semmes, the Community Foundation grant as well as other donated funds were leveraged to meet the 20 per cent matching requirements in order to assure state funds for community improvement projects for a $207,000 grant received for the $500,000 project.

Amy Owen, executive director of the Community Foundation, said the funds were donated in 2013 by two local donorsaCasey Crane and Chandler Van Voorhisawho wanted to invest in reduced light pollution and glare in the town of Middleburg.

It reduces light pollution and makes the lighting more efficient.

Construction on the new streetlights is scheduled to begin in late summer, and will be a part of the townas ongoing project to improve sidewalks and crosswalks, as well as adding a new and improved water line.

We all know Steve Nash’s incredible gift as an athlete. In 2001, he formed the Steve Nash Foundation, a charity aimed at helping aunderserved childrena in British Columbia and around the world:

Dedicated to assisting underserved children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life, the Steve Nash Foundation operates globally to increase access to critical needs resources for children affected by poverty, illness, abuse or neglect. Through its own initiatives, as well as grants to child-focused non-profits, the Foundation builds healthy communities by growing health in kids.

The Foundation focuses its work in Arizona (Educare Arizona, an early learning initiative), British Columbia (BC Grants), nationally across Canada (a child abuse prevention strategy in cooperation with the University of Victoria), the USA (Child Abuse Research and Education initiative), and overseas in Paraguay (Support Hope, providing for critical needs health and community resources).

Through its aBC Grantsa program, the foundation has awarded more than $800,000 to non-profit organizations throughout the province that focus on child health and education services.

The foundation has also contributed significantly toward two hospitals in Paraguay: building a new pediatric cardiac centre in one, and a centre specializing in cervical cancer treatment in another.

And in Arizona a where Mr. To date, the foundation has contributed more than $2-million toward the program.

In 2006, he was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Three social enterprises were recognized at the 2013 President’s Challenge Social Enterprise Award for their major contributions to society. SATA CommHealth and Bliss Restaurant landed Social Enterprise of the Year titles, while Bettr Barista Coffee Academy bagged the award for Social Enterprise Start-up of the Year.
