COOS BAY Mark Helfrich has put Coos Bay on the map in the world of college football as head coach of the high-powered Oregon football team.

On Thursday night, he gave his former high school a big boost as the headline guest for a fundraising event at The Mill Casino-Hotel.

The Coos Bay Schools Community Foundation sold more than 350 tickets at $100 a plate for the dinner and appearance by Helfrich, which turned out to be part roast, part praise and part thanks directed both from the former Marshfield quarterback, and back to him by the Bay Area community.

“It’s very, very humbling, very cool for us to be here,” Helfrich told the crowd. “What a great role model for our kids in Coos Bay to have.”

Helfrich thanked many of his former teachers and coaches in both entertaining and serious tones, praising the librarian for instilling a love of reading and one of his science teachers for properly calling him to task when an erosion project was sub-standard.

“Thanks for teaching us how to work and have discipline,” he said.

Helfrich also pointed out how community members stepped up every time the school district made cuts to athletics and other valuable school programs.

“In my current job, we travel and get to meet a lot of people teachers, parents, people of influence,” he said.

Since then, itas always maintained its partnership and commitment to teachers, she said.

Over at Whiteaker Middle School, the grant will be used to take eighth grade AVID students on a college tour.

For the past few years, the group had to generate their own funds for the field trips, but that money ran out, said Lauren Stephenson, eighth grade language arts teacher and AVID coordinator.

The students had previously visited two public universities, but Stephenson wanted them to visit a small, private school like Linfield College.

Stephenson said she really appreciates the grant because the money will go directly to the students.

aI think itas just a sign to us that our community wants to support us here at school,a Stephenson said.

Phil Hanson: Charitable donors have many options

February 27, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

This on-again, off-again policy-making leads only to confusion for charitably minded people who care deeply about their community, so let’s hope the Senate and president also act on this important legislation. On the local level we are beginning our annual community grants process. A charitable remainder trust is a much different type of trust for individuals who care about charities but also need income for themselves or other family members. Beneficiaries receiving the income from the trust could be the donor and donor spouse, children of the donor, or any other designated person.A charitable remainder trust can be a great retirement planning tool for a charitably minded business owner making plans to retire. After the last beneficiary dies the remainder could create a new grant-making fund for our community that could be tailored to their particular charitable interests.Page 2 of 2 – The Community Foundation, upon receiving the shares of the business, would be looking for a buyer for the shares of the business, and convert them to marketable securities to generate annual income for the donor. In addition to receiving the annual income from the charitable remainder trust, the donor would avoid capital gains taxes that would have resulted from the sale of the shares of the business and receive a charitable deduction for the portion of the gift determined to be the charitable portion (the estimated remainder that will go to charity). Appreciated real estate is another common asset used for establishing a charitable remainder trust. We encourage charitably minded people to consider planned gifts like a CRT that can be mutually beneficial, and to inform their attorney or financial planning professional about their charitable interests.
