Two Dover outreach youth groups were approved for $125,000 grant from Wentworth- Douglas Hospital designed to help battle the local opioid epidemic. The funding will be used to improve the quality of life for Dover youth and families and prevent harm caused by substance abuse. A press release stated that the funding will go toward creation of public service announcements to increase awareness of current heroin and opioid epidemic, training employers to recognize substance abuse and how to help, and exploration of drug treatment models to support recovery. The focus of these programs will be education, awareness, treatment, and ultimately prevention.
The youth programs and assistance from Dover police department are making an impact according to Garry walker, CEO and President of Wentworth-Douglas health System. Vickie Herbert, Coordinator for Coalition for youth said that the hospital's support is indispensable and necessary to continue effectiveness and progress that Dover is known for. The Dover police department has expressed for the relationship with Wentworth-Douglas hospital, claiming that their support will allow prevention programs to be sustained and help develop new initiatives to address substance abuse in communities.
