A major gift from a Boston-area couple will fund research into the "untapped healing potential" of food, according to a press release from the Angiogenesis Foundation.
The couple, St.phane and Brenda Bancel, have donated $10 million to the nonprofit, which aims to use food to prevent, treat, and reverse diseases through the formation of new blood vessel growth, or angiogenesis.
"By harnessing the remarkable potential of foods that influence angiogenesis, the Foundation seeks to lower the societal burden of disease, improve health outcomes, and enhance the well-being of individuals globally," says the press release.
Dr. William Li, the foundation's CEO, calls the donation the "largest single donation in the Foundation's history," according to the Boston Globe.
Li is the author of two best-selling books on food and health, Eat to Beat Disease and Eat to Beat Your Diet.
