"We need to break the stigma of mental health and let our community know that for many, mental health is a necessity, not a luxury," says the executive director of a North Carolina nonprofit.

The Outer Banks Community Foundation has awarded a $40,000 grant to the Interfaith Community Outreach's Sound Minds program, which aims to increase resources for better mental health support in the community, reports the Coastland Times.

"Our grants committee spoke to civic leaders across the Outer Banks, and mental health access was a common concern," says Chris Sawin, CEO of the foundation, which has awarded more than $13 million in grants since its inception in 1982.

Sound Minds is working with the state's Department of Health and Human Services and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation to increase resources for better mental health support in the community.
