Councillors agree 11% school clothing grant rise | Northern Times | News Councillors agree 11% school clothing grant rise

THERE was good news this week for cash-strapped families who struggle to buy school uniforms for their children.

Highland Council is increasing a grant available to help eligible families buy suitable school clothing for their youngsters.

And the rise is a generous one 11 per cent, meaning the maximum grant now goes up from 81 to 90.

The increase was agreed at a meeting this week of the council’s resources committee.

Afterwards, committee chairman Bill Fernie said: “This 11% grant increase makes the cost of school uniforms more affordable for many families and will be implemented immediately.

“I urge all families that may be entitled to this grant, that haven’t already done so, to apply without delay.”

The rise applies to all applications for assistance with school clothing made since April 1 this academic year.

Scottish local authorities are required to make provisions for the clothing of pupils who would otherwise be unable to take full advantage of the education provided at schools.

In Highland, assistance with school clothing can be claimed if you are in receipt of various benefits.

Toyota grant to fund JA school aid programs

TUPELO Two programs serving students in the Tupelo Public School District got a financial boost from Toyota Mississippi on Wednesday.

The programs, Silent Servings and Clothes Closet, both run by Junior Auxiliary of Tupelo, received $10,000 from Toyota through a grant.

Silent Servings provides snack bags to students referred by counselors. Students are referred by school counselors, schedule an appointment and are invited to come shop JA’s clothes closet and be fitted for several outfits or other items of clothing that they need.

Kathryn Ragsdale, external communications officer at Toyota Mississippi, said the company seeks to support these kinds of community services.

“Programs like this really speak to our two pillars continuous improvement and respect for people so these two programs help to support our neighbors and our communities,” Ragsdale said.

Meg Gibens, JA president, said the Toyota money will help fund the expansion and extend the reach of the programs.

From last year to this year, the number of students served by Silent Servings has nearly doubled, Gibens said.

Christy Carroll, principal at Carver Elementary School, said Silent Servings and Clothes Closet do more than feed and clothe students.

“It really means a lot more than just a bag of food for a child,” Carroll said.

State finally releases grants for local park projects

The development of the historic Yunker Farm by the Mokena Park District is already underway, but the district will finally receive a long awaited $400,000 grant from state to help pay for amenities that include a splash pad, band shell, community gardens and dog park. The development of the historic Yunker Farm by the Mokena Park District is already underway, but the district will finally receive a long awaited $400,000 grant from state to help pay for amenities that include a splash pad, band shell, community gardens and dog park. It is the district’s first dog park in Eastern Will County.

“Given the condition of the state, we didn’t expect to get the grant,” said Ralph Schultz, chief operating officer for the Forest Preserve District, which now will receive $400,000.

The Forest Preserve District made adjustments to other capital improvements so it could start the dog park without the grant, he said.

If additional funding became available, the forest preserve hoped to add a drinking fountain and extend the Plum Creek Greenway Trail.

While it’s a “relief” to get the OSLAD grant, there were other forest preserve projects that did not get funding from other grants administered by the IDNR.

The bike trail connection to the DuPage River Trail in Bolingbrook “was so important” that the Bolingbrook Park District provided the funds to complete it, Schultz said.

But plans to replace the longhouse at the Isla ala Cache museum in Romeoville came to a halt when the public museum grant was suspended.

“Hopefully, we’ll hear something about that in the future,” Schultz said.

The Mokena Park District began development of the historic Yunker Farm this year, and is now expected to receive a $400,000 OSLAD grant. New amenities there will include a splash pad, dog park, community gardens and band shell.

There were other park projects that could not happen without the grant funds, such as the redevelopment of Community Park in the Frankfort Square Park District.

Executive Director Jim Randall said he is “waiting for the check” before beginning work at the 5.5 acre park at St. Its grant application for $171,000 was approved in 2013.

According to the IDNR, other parks that are expected to receive grant funds include:

Calumet Park A $266,000 OSLAD grant for Veterans Park development and a PARC grant for Sandridge Community Center.

Chicago Heights A $400,000 OSLAD grant for Euclid Park and a PARC grant for its recreation center.

Manhattan Park District A $216,500 OSLAD grant for Central Park.

Markham Construction of baseball fields and an indoor track and field and gymnastics facility.

Sauk Village For Arrowhead Park.

University Park Pine Lake outdoor development.
