Fifteen individuals have been selected as winners of the 2016 AOPA Flight Training Scholarships, a program designed to help aviation trainees of all ages earn a pilot certificate. The scholarships are funded by donations to the AOPA Foundation.

The AOPA Flight Training Scholarship program launched in 2011, focused on facilitating a positive flight training experience that would encourage student pilots to achieve their goals. By helping to produce new pilots, the scholarship program also strives to ensure general aviation’s future, with scholarship recipients serving as ambassadors for GA and flight training on a grass-roots level. Working a full time job, a part-time job, and securing scholarship funding will “put me that much closer to the bigger dream of becoming a mission pilot,” he said.

Rebecca Cheek, 36, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, has been awarded the Fred and Diane Fitts Memorial Flight Training Scholarship sponsored by an endowment from the Corporate Aircraft Association that will help her resume flight training after an absence of several years. “After 13.2 hours and 10 lessons later, I am on my way to accomplishing my dream,” he said, looking at a future in which he envisions taking people for airplane rides in the short term and later becoming a flight instructor and airline pilot.

Gustin soloed at 20 hours, and he has an aviation wish list that includes being able to fly cross-country to visit family and friends, and to use his technical knowledge to make simulator training more available in his area including giving high school students a chance to experience aviation.

Another motivation for resuming his training is to be able to take his brother, who was injured in an aircraft accident but never lost his passion for flight despite being unable to pursue a dream of becoming a pilot, flying “as often as possible.” (In his many years of living in the United States, he had only managed to take two instructional flights before signing up for flight training last April, he said.) Earning a private pilot certificate and an instrument rating is his goal as he divides his busy time between work, family, school events, and aviation.

Becoming a professional pilot is now her goal but before that, she looks forward to flying her family around the beautiful San Juan Islands as a private pilot.

“I can truly say that when you find your purpose, you know, and I know my purpose is to become the next certified aerobatic helicopter pilot inside the United States,” she said.

Each scholarship recipient also will receive a gift certificate for MyGoFlight products, made possible by the company’s Pilot ONE scholarship assist program to help create more pilots.

Recently, more of those speaking engagements have been in the U.S., which is helping Stegemann spread the word about her growing social enterprise.

She recently launched a series of book club Master classes based on her book and in addition to being able to buy the book, participants can also purchase the perfumes. “We started getting requests from women who wanted to host their own book clubs.”

That has led Stegemann to work on a business plan based on a direct selling model that would create another sales channel for all her products.

“The book itself is all about empowering women and with Book Club Master Classes we’re creating an opportunity for women to become entrepreneurs,” she said, adding that the plan is to train Philosopher Queens to host the clubs and do product sales. There are also plans to create custom fragrances, giving people who attend the book club the opportunity to create their unique fragrance.

“We can keep freshening the Book Club Master Class all the time as we grow.”

First step approved toward Hedde Building renovation – The Grand Island Independent: Local News First step approved toward Hedde Building renovation

An extensive $3.8 million renovation of the three-story Hedde Building in downtown Grand Island cleared its first hurdle Wednesday a approval of a $200,000 life-safety grant from Grand Islandas Community Redevelopment Authority.

aThis is a big, complicated project,a said building owner Amos Anson, who is partnering on the renovation with Grand Island businessman Tom Pirnie.

CRA member Glen Murray said its an ambitious project, but he sees the renovation of that building as a key to downtown and an integral part of keeping the downtownas recent momentum going.

Next, the downtown focused on bringing entertainment and vibrancy through creating a night life, such as through the Hear Grand Island, a downtown concert series.

The next step, he said, is to create additional opportunities for people to live downtown a such as through the Hedde Building renovation and a recently approved project for Tom Ziller to create apartments in the former Labor Federal Building.

CRA Director Chad Nabity said by approving the $200,000 life-safety grant, the CRA will assist Anson and Pirnie in building the stack of additional funding required for the extensive renovation project.

The $200,000 grant was approved on a 4-0 vote with Pirnieas wife, Sue, who is a CRA member, abstaining from the vote.

Scotland’s social enterprises poised for a supermarket sweep

The agency has teamed up with supermarket giant Asda to develop the UK’s first ever boot camp for social companies.

Funded by cash raised from the carrier bag levy, the inaugural supplier development academy took place over four days this summer at Asda HQ in Leeds, with 15 social entrepreneurs 12 of them from Scotland coming together for a series of masterclasses in mass retail marketing. Growth at that scale will allow for radical business development, and in turn increase social impact and reach.

Asda Social Enterprise Supplier Development Academy – company profiles

Brewgooder, Edinburgh

Turning craft beer into clean water by donating all of its profits to projects in the developing world.

Breadshare Community Bakery, Edinburgh

Proper organic bread, made with the local community at its heart and sold at a fair price.

Power a Life, Linlithgow

Every purchase of its ethical mobile phone accessories buys a solar light for a school child in Africa.

JTS Ltd, Paisley

Empowering smallholder farmers and producers in the developing world through ethical food production, marketing and distribution.

Vision 21, Cardiff

Providing quality training and support for people with learning needs through 17 individual social enterprise projects.

The benefits for Asda will come though offering more choice to its 19 million weekly customers, not to mention the PR appeal of being associated with the ethical enterprise scene. He believes it could be a game changer in how social enterprises retail to the public: “By promoting social enterprise products as viable alternatives to their commercial counterparts, we have a fantastic opportunity to significantly increase the revenues raised by the sector and, in turn, create much more sustainable and long term social impacts for our communities up and down the country.”

Social enterprise may be relatively well known in third sector circles, but awareness among the general public is limited.
