Study: Connecticut Still Ranks Average In Startup Growth

June 17, 2016 4:15 am Published by

Connecticut has made progress in helping startups grow in the past few years, but compared to other states, it still sits among the middle of the pack.

A new study by The Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurshipshows that Connecticut ranked 13th a four-spot jump from the previous ranking among the 25 smaller states in average growth for young businesses and startups. Reedy, a Kauffman senior fellow.

A separate Kauffman Index study ranked Connecticut 35th out of all 50 states in startup activity in 2015, focusing on new business creation activity and people engaging in business startup activity. He cited the state’s proximity to Boston and New York City, and services such as reSET, as one of the factors in his move.

But to climb the ranks in startup growth, Lazar said he recommends the state develop incentives, such as establishing “entrepreneur zones.” He also pointed to Connecticut Innovations, formed by the state legislature in 1989 to help finance Connecticut tech companies and support their growth.

James Woulfe, reSET’s director of advocacy and external affairs, said the state could increase its ranking by taking on an identity, such as becoming the state for social entrepreneurship.

LEONARDO DiCaprio is expected to follow in the footsteps of George Clooney and visit a Scottish social enterprise cafe later this year.

The Oscar winner is believed to have accepted an invitation to travel to Edinburgh in support of Social Bite, a sandwich shop that feeds, trains and employs local homeless people.

The Hollywood star will also speak at the Scottish Business Awards during his first visit to Scotland.

Clooney paid a visit to Social Bite last November and launched an appeal to help homeless people and fund an aid convoy carrying food and clothing to travel to refugee camps across Europe.

It received so many donations that Social Bite said surplus funds would ensure free hot meals and drinks can be provided to the homeless community in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen for a year.

Clooney went on to launch the enterprises Christmas campaign and appeared in the related video.

The not-for-profit enterprise was founded in 2012 by Josh Littlejohn and one in four Social Bite staff were previously homeless themselves.

Fans lined Rose Street in the Scottish capital last year to welcome Clooney who took time to chat to the crowd and posed for selfies with Social Bite staff before speaking at the Scottish Business Awards.

DiCaprio, who won an Oscar for his role in The Revenant, is also an environmental campaigner and charity activist.
