Child Development Resources Leases New Building Through Fatherhood Grant

Child Development Resources Leases New Building Through Fatherhood Grant | Williamsburg Yorktown Daily (Elizabeth Hornsby/WYDaily)

Child Development Resources recently signed a lease on a new training space that will help relieve overcrowding in its existing offices and facilitate classes associated with its popular Fatherhood program.

The 2,683-square-foot space, located at 210 Packets Drive in James City County, fulfills several needs the organization has been trying to meet recently, CDR Executive Director Paul Scott said.

“Primarily [the space] is to accommodate staff we needed to hire for our Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood program,” Scott said.

CDR was awarded a $682,981 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last October that will sustain its existing Fatherhood program offerings and continue to expand the program’s services and scope.

The grant has allowed CDR to begin the search for a new space in which to house its Fatherhood program staff, classes and trainings, and the Packet Drive location was well-suited to CDR’s purposes since it had previously been used as an emergency medical services training space.

Equipped with a large conference room, several offices, storage space and two observation rooms complete with one-way mirrors, the building will be able to offer much to both Fatherhood program staff and clients, but Scott said it will also be a boon to the rest of CDR.

“We’re just overcrowded in both of our [other] buildings,” Scott said of CDR’s two Norge-based offices.

Some employees will shift from those offices to the new space, and the staff in general will also use the conference rooms, meeting rooms and training spaces in the building, as needed.

The Packets Drive building also has an advantage by nature of its location, which is much closer to York County than the other offices.

Since CDR serves families throughout the Historic Triangle, the new satellite office can serve as a home base for staff making home visits to families in that area, rather than requiring them to travel all the way up to Norge, Scott said.

“When this grant was awarded it presented an opportunity to kill three bird with one stone, so to speak,” Scott said.

Scott hopes the new location will be up and running by the end of April, though many of the new Fatherhood program offerings may not launch until later this summer.

While the new space does much to alleviate crowding issues, Scott said the organization will be looking closely at putting together a strategic plan for all of its facilities in the coming months.

“One of our buildings needs renovations, so we’re in the middle of surveying space needs and making a plan,” Scott said.

Prince, the Secret Philanthropist: ‘His Cause Was Humanity’

Van Jones explains Prince’s secret philanthropic initiatives.

That’s when Jones learned about Prince’s secret other gig: philanthropist. Since Prince’s death last Thursday, Jones has learned just how involved Prince was in philanthropic causes. “He wasn’t red, and he wasn’t blue,” Jones says. Prince with Rosario Dawson and Van Jones on ‘The View’ in 2012.

Asked if certain causes appealed to Prince more than others, Jones just laughs. While people were debating whether the 17-year-old was a “thug or a victim” and whether George Zimmerman was a “racist or a hero,” in Jones’ words, Prince zeroed in on the hoodie Martin wore.

In a recent interview with CNN, Jones suggested that many of Prince’s pop-up concerts such as the one he played last year in Baltimore in the wake of the Freddie Gray riots were a cover for him to meet with politicians.

“A lot of times, he would do these tricky things, where people [in power] are coming because they think or assume or hope they’re going to meet him,” Jones says.

In the days since Prince’s death, Jones says he now realized that the artist had reached out to hundreds of people with the aim of helping. He’d read about a negative event in the news (“He was a news nerd,” Jones says) and then try and figure out a way to do something about it. “He had a level of pure genius that he expressed through music, and people think, ‘Therefore he’s a musical genius,'” Jones says.

Even if it wasn’t readily apparent to his fans, social causes were an interest that permeated Prince’s whole being, Jones says.

“Just like he had a whole roster of musicians, he had a whole roster of intellectuals, a whole roster of political activists, a whole roster of change-makers,” Jones continues.

Prince’s Quiet Philanthropic Legacy

Prince’s Quiet Philanthropic Legacy: Associations Now His approach to philanthropy wasn’t one of them.

But, in the wake of his recent passing, the pop star’s significant gifts to nonprofits are starting to become public.

There are people that have solar panels on their houses right now in Oakland, California, that don’t know Prince paid for them.

In the past few years, Prince donated both time and money to #YesWeCode, a nonprofit organization that brings technology opportunities to underprivileged youth. He wanted to keep his passion for underprivileged people between him and his god.”

The launch of #YesWeCode was public, in part because Prince helped launch the group at the 2014 Essence Festival. Jones explained that #YesWeCode came about in an effort to counteract the politics of the Trayvon Martin shooting:

“After the Trayvon Martin verdict I was talking to Prince and he said, ‘You know, every time people see a young black man wearing a hoodie, they think, he’s a thug. To deal with what we’re not doing to get our young people prepared to be a part of this new information economy.'”

While Prince’s role with #YesWeCode was known, his ties to Green for All were hidden from view until Jones revealed in a CNN segment last week that Prince was the driving force behind the group, both financially and motivationally.

“There are people that have solar panels on their houses right now in Oakland, California, that don’t know Prince paid for them,” Jones said in the CNN segment.

Prince also had ties to philanthropic initiatives that weren’t associated with Jones. What Elkhart athletics might look like with one high school, early voting in Elkhart County doubles and three more stories to start your day

WHAT ELKHART ATHLETICS MIGHT LOOK LIKE WITH ONE HIGH SCHOOL

Not so fast if you’ve been imagining that Elkhart High School will morph into a perennial sports superpower by combining Central and Memorial high schools.

It’s fair and easy to deduce that virtually any given team in any given sport under such a consolidation as is being explored by Elkhart Community Schools would be better than Central and Memorial each are on their own. EARLY VOTING IN ELKHART COUNTY ALREADY DOUBLE 2012 PACE

More than twice as many people in Elkhart County already have voted early for the May 3 presidential primary than the number four years ago at this point in the 2012 election cycle.

The Bristol Park Department has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County to help build a walking path and exercise park in Cummins Park.

“We believe that the Bristol Park Board is another excellent example of our mission to improve the quality of life in Elkhart County by inspiring generosity,” said Pete McCown, foundation president.

“News that Elkhart Community Schools officials are seriously considering merging the district’s two high schools and making dramatic changes to other buildings will generate a flurry of questions, anxiety and possibly anger. Just as the decision more than four decades ago to split the old Elkhart High School into two schools divided the community in a way that took years to recover, the plan announced Thursday has the potential to do the same.”
