Two Dubuque nonprofits aim to develop a clearer picture of demands for child care services in the community.

Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States launched an online survey to assess child care needs among community members with children younger than 10. The effort is part of a larger project to determine the needs of Dubuque-area residents in the areas of child care, employment and mental health.

aFor the homeless population, child care is a huge, insurmountable barrier,a Wood said. aItas a chicken and an egg situation because they need a job to afford child care, but they canat get a job without having child care.a

Participants in the Circles Initiative, which connects volunteers and community leaders to families and individuals wanting to emerge from poverty, also find child care to be a barrier to achieving self-sufficiency, Wood said.

The few extra dollars tacked onto their paychecks can cause families to lose federal benefits, including child care subsidies, creating a benefits acliff,a Wood said.

aWe conducted focus groups of people who provide in-home child care who talked about getting calls from women who has just found out they were pregnant and trying to make sure they had a slot eight to nine months away.

Tara Roddick, child-care consultant supervisor at Iowa Child Care Resource & Referral, said the state as a whole has witnessed a reduction in the number of in-home child care providers over the past 15 years.

Editorial: Stop-gap MAP Grant legislation not enough

April 24, 2016 10:03 pm Published by

After a long year of diligent work by lawmakers in Springfield, $600 million of state funding was approved by the legislature on Friday to aid nine state universities a majority of the funding will primarily be used to provide MAP grants to low-income students.

Congratulations. Illinois is the only state in the Union that hasn’t passed a state budget and people are watching, especially students. Schools like Eastern Illinois and Chicago State will suffer because of the state’s lack of action. And those who haven’t would probably not be confident in returning to the school, or any state job for that matter.

Why would a student choose to go to either of those schools when they don’t know what the school’s future will hold in the next year?

With the current funding, 5,667 students on the Urbana campus have peace of mind knowing they won’t need to pay back the MAP grants they received for the 2015-2016 school year.

This semester, seventh-grade students at South worked on projects of their own invention as part of the Genius Project. “We made a whole website and it had decent videos on it.”

Isaac said he didn’t have much experience with video before working on the website, and doing the project helped him realize that video editing is something he likes.

Zelvy and five other teachers at South Kelly Hart, Beth Weishaar, Stephanie Coleman, Whitney Farrell and Cathy Hilliard initiated the projects, which students worked on over the course of nine weeks during their guided studies period. Zelvy said that regardless of the topic, the projects required students to come up with alternatives when their ideas didn’t work as planned. This is harder than we thought, so who can we bring in to help us?”

The Genius Project will continue at South next school year, and students will have additional resources to work with. The project was recently awarded a $2,000 grant from the Lawrence Schools Foundation to purchase additional supplies for projects. ” Things that just aren’t in a middle school curriculum.”

Teachers can reapply for Lawrence Schools Foundation grants each year, and Zelvy said they hope to continue the project in years to come. April 22, 2016 42 comments April 22, 2016 17 comments

United States Tops Philanthropic Giving According to the 2016 BNP Paribas Individual Philanthropy

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — According to the fourth annual BNP Paribas Individual Philanthropy Index by Forbes Insights, the United States remains the leader globally in personal philanthropy. Europe comes in as a close second, followed by Asia, with the Middle East achieving the sharpest increase in philanthropic giving. Almost all countries were focused on “health” as the top area of philanthropic giving (United States at 60%), while Asia as a region chose “environment.” Respondents in the United States were more likely to give to local causes (24%) and they saw the best form of charitable collaboration as working with other individual philanthropists (48%), rather than partnering with philanthropic organizations, as is the case in Europe and Asia.
