LCCF grants make projects possible

BEDFORD a The Lawrence County Community Foundation is currently in the midst of its 2016 open grant cycle. Dollars made available from these grants can help groups and organizations to carry out projects that they might otherwise be unable to afford.

A good example is what the local Knights of Columbus Council has been able to accomplish in recent years with the help of LCCF grants.

For 38 consecutive years the Knights have conducted their Tootsie Roll Drive to raise funds that are used to help local children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The recipients of these funds have been the LARC Center, the former Englewood School, and more recently, the Special Education Department within the North Lawrence Community Schools.

aFor the first 30 some years our annual fundraising effort was limited to canister collections that took place over a two-day period at the entrances of several local businesses.

Tenderloin Community Benefit District Launching New Security Camera Program

March 25, 2016 10:26 pm Published by

A new set of security cameras will soon appear in the Tenderloin.

Operation Leadership efforts, which include the launch of a surveillance camera pilot program, a public art installation on Larkin Street and fresh street banners around the neighborhood.

With the new funding in place, the CBD is currently in talks with several property owners in the neighborhood about potentially installing surveillance cameras on their buildings, with the hope of getting the first seven to eight cameras online in the coming months.

The District Attorney’s Office and the Tenderloin Police Station strongly support the pilot program, with Tenderloin Station Captain Teresa Ewins saying that the new cameras will fill gaps not covered by cameras already in place.

“We can bring [crime] down by just having the video,” said Ewins. The station already communicates with some camera owners when officers need footage.

Based on the station’s advice, the first set of CBD cameras will appear at Leavenworth and Golden Gate.

When it comes to volunteering, think of yourself as a resource | FOR GOOD FOR EVER

March 25, 2016 9:52 pm Published by

When it comes to volunteering, think of yourself as a resource | FOR GOOD FOR EVER – Renton Reporter And yet, it seems we don’t have the resources needed to feed the hungry, find shelter for the homeless, get kids off the street, solve the drug problem or make a dent in a host of other societal issues.

So you might ask, if our country is incapable of addressing these major problems, what can one person do to make a difference?

It’s simple: Become the resource yourself. Find a way to say yes instead of no.

At a recent dinner, I spoke to the crowd about my own volunteer work with Hearts4Doxies as a foster for abandoned dogs. Even if you don’t have a specific skill or talent, you can always donate a bag of gently used clothes to the Renton Kiwanis Clothes Bank or a bag of food to the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank.

Let’s face it, when asked for help by a nonprofit in need or someone less fortunate, you’re being given the opportunity to be a resource to your community.
