Cumbrian communities offered grants to manage local woods in new pilot

March 1, 2016 3:18 am Published by

The new pilot launched by the Woodland Trust is an attempt to increase the tiny level of woodland currently in community ownership, building on the work of existing organisations in the region.

Research suggests just 0.2%1 (4,711 hectares) of woodland in the UK is owned by community groups, but also that the proportion of woodland in community ownership is much lower than elsewhere in Europe.

The Trust, supported by lead partner in the project Nationwide Building Society, has a target of working with 50 communities before the end of the pilot to either establish groups or enable them to take ownership of woodland.

The Trust is offering start-up grants of 500 to new groups looking to form in the pilot region, with established groups looking to take on some form of woodland ownership being eligible to apply for a grant of up to 10,000. The charity will also hold a number of training events to help communities build management and engagement skills and has launched a website which provides information and resources for anyone to find out how to set up a group to help manage or acquire an area of woodland.

Beccy Speight, Woodland Trust chief executive, said: “Trees and woods have so many benefits for society but we’re becoming increasingly disconnected from the natural world. The renewal of energy and enthusiasm that training apprentices brings is heart-warming and best of all they get stuck in, both to the woodland work and working for the good of the coppice community, through being actively involved with BHMAT the Coppice Association North West.”

Nationwide is pledging over 1.25 million to support the Woodland Trust’s community woodland pilot. As well as this it will be inspiring, motivating and supporting communities to create, manage, and own their local woods.

Stephen Uden, Nationwide’s Head of Citizenship, said: “Nationwide has long supported a range of community groups and organisations as part of our Living our Your Side strategy and we see woodland use as an important, constructive and healthy way to help bring people together.

“By providing community groups with the financial and practical support they need to plant, manage and take ownership of new woodland spaces, we hope to be able to spark a woodland revolution that will benefit people now and long into the future.”

Nationwide is partnering with the Woodland Trust as part of the Society’s commitment to invest 15m into local communities by 2017 and plant 60,000 trees for each current and future employee and customers that have signed up to receive correspondence electronically.

The pilot is being launched as the Woodland Trust and over 40 other organisations look to create a new grass-roots movement for woods and trees in the form of The Charter for Trees, Woods and People.

My Journey with Community Philanthropy

March 1, 2016 3:02 am Published by

The idea of designing an entire city for children, or better yet, giving back to a community that our children, and their children, and their children’s children, will someday inherit greatly intrigues me.

I simply ask, will it be worth inheriting?

I believe community foundations support the fundamental right to preserve, protect, and make better our world – at least, our little corner of it. As the new Director of Community Philanthropy at the Council, I look forward to interacting with the field of community foundations of all sizes, shapes, and models across our country. I received a scholarship from my local community foundation before I ever comprehended the value of a bequest, an endowment, or community philanthropy.

Today is our community’s second Big Share a a 24-hour online fundraising event to benefit the 70 nonprofit member organizations of Community Shares. Those groups, which include Wheels for Winners, Wisconsin Women’s Network, Madison Audubon Society, Disability Rights Wisconsin, Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired, League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Farmers Union, Physicians for Social Responsibility, 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, and many more, are working toward a fair, just community and protection of our natural resources.

If you go today to the event’s Web page, you can check out the sub-pages of the nonprofit members of Community Shares.

The event began at midnight and ends at midnight tonight.

Like last year, cash prizes from local businesses can add to the value of an individual gift.

Last year, in its debut in our area, the Big Share raised over $232,000 from 1,750 donors. Community Shares Executive Director Crystel Anders says that in addition to the substantial funds raised for the nonprofits, the Big Share had the added impact of engaging new people in local organizations.A

If you’d rather donate by mail or in person, that’s fine.

Thursday at Town Hall on the grant application for work to be performed at the Dublin Village housing complex. COLCHESTER Colchester will soon apply for $800,000 in state grant money to improve parts of the Dublin Village senior housing complex.Town Planner Randall Benson said the planned work would include repaving the parking lot in the complex, remodeling bathrooms and installing additional sidewalks and exterior lighting.DublinVillage has 40 units of age-restricted housing off Lebanon Avenue and is approximately 45 years old.Tenant Louis Delpivo, a resident for 12 years, is looking forward to the work. The sidewalks and the parking lot really need the work.”Colchester Housing Authority Executive Director Rob Gustafson said the lot hadn’t been resurfaced in more than 20 years.”It’s well past its expected life,” he said.The town is applying for the grant and would perform the work because DublinVillage is administered by the Colchester Housing Authority.Colchester will apply for up to $800,000 in Small Cities Community Development Block Grant funds. That’s the maximum amount the town can apply for under the grant’s Public Housing Modernization category.Projects that receive CDBG money must meet any one of several objectives, including benefiting low- and moderate-income people.The town must hold a public hearing prior to submitting the application. Shilosky said Colchester routinely applies for grants for projects such as streetscape improvements and open space land acquisition.”We apply for as many grants as we can,” he said. “Some years we get a grant and in the years where we don’t, we’re still on a waiting list and we move up to the top on the list for the next year.”Gustafson said that in addition to the CDBG grant, the authority hopes to get more state funding eventually to do a “phase 2″ of work, including constructing a building for storage. mainImageContainerInnerHTML_sm += ”+mainImageData_credit+”; mainImageContainerInnerHTML_sm += ”+mainImageData_caption+”; $(‘#art-main-image-credit-container_sm’).css(‘width’,smimgwidth).css(‘padding’,’3px ‘+(mainImageData_leftPadding – 3)+’px 0 0’); $(‘#art-main-image-caption-container_sm’).css(‘width’,sm_img.width).css(‘padding’,’5px 0 0 ‘+(mainImageData_leftPadding + 3)+’px’); $(‘#art-main-image-caption-container’).css(‘width’,img.width).css(‘padding’,’5px 0 0 ‘+mainImageData_leftPadding+’px’);
