Both books speak to our need for meaning.

In their own ways, they also address humanity’s search for security, including the simple blessing of a roof.

Across the river in Amherst, people arrive in a downtown church basement nearly every day to do good together. A new project called the One-Stop Resource Center run by Amherst Community Connections helps those facing hardship find shelter and seek work.

Recent Gazette stories described why people are celebrating in Easthampton and, in Amherst, why they are rolling up their sleeves to help others.

The answer, actually, is simple. People celebrated the fact that two families will finally have their own homes in a state that ranks as one of the most expensive housing markets in the U.S, behind only California and Hawaii, according to one 2015 study.

This was a notable achievement for women as well. “I know where there’s like 500 nails in one place because we kept messing up,” she said.

More than 50 people piled into the kitchen of one of the new homes to share the moment, sing and offer gifts.

Social Enterprise: Which Industry Is Winning the Competition for London’s Brightest Youths?
Beyond educating youths of the fallacy that the concepts of profit and charity are mutually exclusive, more so than ever, our education systems need to inculcate empathy and instil a much-needed social agency.

Recognising this, LSE has made efforts to nurture more graduates for the social impact space. In 2015, the school announced the launch of the Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship, which will introduce much needed social entrepreneurship academia and place-based experience for its students, including a Master’s programme, executive courses and certified curriculum for the wider student populace.

The past fall was also the first time the US$1,000,000 Hult Prize Challenge was held at LSE. Held in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative, the Hult Prize is a social impact competition that challenges university students to build innovative social enterprises to solve a pressing world issue. It is a global student movement to ignite our youths’ inner spark for social change.

As the Campus Director of the inaugural Hult Prize at LSE, I have been heartened to witness the passionate responses of my peers to the first social entrepreneurship competition of its kind to be held on campus.

The LSE winning team, Dapurasa,, is a food delivery platform leveraging on the untapped potential of street food vendors in the informal economy, while another team, LabourChowk, is pioneering a jobs discovery service aiming to move tradespeople up the pyramid in the developing world.

Senate to be notified of next big education grant

The next time Georgia applies for tens of millions of dollars in education grants, the Senate will hear the details beforehand if a bill that passed the Senate ultimately becomes law.

Senate Bill 310 requires reporting of any grant application for more than $20 million that affects pre-kindergarten through high school education. Officials would have to tell the Senate Education and Youth committee if the grant would cause any state policy change or unfunded costs.

Testimony in committee hearings suggested the legislation was triggered by the state’s acceptance in 2010 of a recession-era federal grant that led to policy changes, including the establishment of teacher evaluations. Vincent Fort, D-Atlanta, said the state would be at a disadvantage in future grant applications as a result of SB 310 because it could be interpreted as “less committed.”

Ligon said the bill does not require legislative approval of a grant application, only notification and analysis of the effects.

“I fail to see how transparency can keep you from getting a grant,” he said. Register Create a New Account Just One More Thing…
