This time last year marked the 100th anniversary of community foundations, of which there are now more than 750 across the country. That event was kicked off by a national day of giving which was so successful for our next guest’s organization that it has now become an annual event, which just so happens is today.

Mike Switzer interviews JoAnn Turnquist, president of the Central Carolina Community Foundation, host of today’s event: Midlands Gives.

Monies for the Lehman, Corya and Springmeyer scholarships are held by the Decatur County Community Foundation. The Arthur Moor and Dollars for Scholars Memorial Scholarships were both made possible when the South Decatur division of Dollars for Scholars closed its chapter and transferred the scholarship monies from its treasury to the Decatur County Community Scholarship Foundation, which will continue to award these memorial scholarships in the future. Additional scholarships, including the Jean Reed and the George Hayes Memorial Scholarships were made possible by contributions made in memory of those founders at each of their deaths.

CFOW grants boost mental health services in Whistler The Community Foundation of Whistler (CFOW) awarded grants to three organizations that provide mental health services in Whistler ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week, running from May 4 10.

The North Shore Schizophrenia Society received $2,000 for its Family-to-Family Support, Whistler Community Services Society was awarded $2,500 for its counselling assistance program and the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC got $1,000 for its youth suicide prevention program, all awarded under the Jill Ackhurst Social Action Grants program, which focused on mental health for a second year. The suicide prevention centre also received an additional $1,000 as part of the Whistler Youth Foundation grants.

To that end, the organization will use the funding to travel to Whistler to visit local schools and offer workshops to kids Grades 7 to 12. Ideally, they would like to offer both their Reaching Out: Suicide Awareness & Response workshop, which helps young people recognize the signs of suicidal behaviour, and its Work Your Mind Muscle: 4 Tools for Navigating Life workshop, to help teach coping strategies. “Teachers have noticed an impact on students’ ability to concentrate and stress impact It helps young people from (anywhere) to deal with stress and pressures. The $2,000 in funding from the CFOW makes a huge difference in helping the organization launch the workshops in Whistler, she added. In total, they hope to facilitate 10 workshops to reach 260 Whistler students between now and December.

The North Shore Schizophrenia Society, meanwhile, will use its CFOW funding to help grow the Family-to-Family Support group it launched last fall. The group which recently moved to the Whistler Public Library where it can accommodate more people helps bring together the families of people suffering from various types of mental illness to discuss struggles, solutions and issues together. Currently, the 12-week course to help participants learn about mental health in an in-depth way is only offered in Squamish. “We’re called the North Shore Schizophrenia Society, but really our services extend to individuals with all forms of mental illness. In total, the CFOW handed out $150,000 in grants to various local charities, ranging from the Zero Ceiling Society of Canada to the Rotary Club of Whistler and Whistler Museum and Archives Society, to name
