26 Georgetown, Horry nonprofits to benefit from Lowcountry Giving Day

May 3, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

Its no magic trick the groups are participating in Lowcountry Giving Day, and while those who choose to donate May 5 may notice their dollars doubling, its due to several large matching donations from a variety of community groups and private donors.

Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina, which facilitates charitable giving plans for Charleston, Beaufort, Berkeley, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry and Jasper counties, is responsible for organizing the day.

On May 5 from 12:01 a.m. all dollars donated through the CCF website to a participating Lowcountry Giving Day nonprofit participant will double.

According to the CCF website, last year Lowcountry Giving Day raised more than $4 million for 93 nonprofits across the coastal counties of the state. Two of the nonprofits also found other donors to provide a match for their organization to participate in the day.

The nonprofits participating in Lowcountry Giving Day are:

A Fathers Place

Ayida Wedo Drummers Society

Brookgreen Gardens

Childrens Mentoring Program

Childrens Recovery Center

Cultural Council of Georgetown County

Were definitely excited, we certainly hope to be able to reach our goals, said Wallace Evans, executive director of A Fathers Place, a nonprofit that works with fathers to help them improve their lives and reconnect with their children.

He said the Waccamaw Community Foundation is contributing a $3,500 match on Giving Day, but overall the organizations goals are to raise $10,000.

The money will be put toward expanding its Conway facility. Right now we have a 1,000 square foot building and there is a lot of noise and distractions.

These funds are going to help to support our expansion so we can better serve our community.

Helping Hands is also looking to expand, according to Executive Director John Bush, and hopes to put its donations toward its new Time to Change program.

(It) is an effort to provide a yearlong structured curriculum to support people in poverty to take significant steps toward self-sufficiency. Weve committed ourselves to hiring an employment coordinator to make that happen, and these donations will be used to fund that position, Bush said.

Helping Hands total fundraising goal is $28,000 including a $10,000 match from the Bunnelle Foundation and a $4,000 match from private donor Jody Tamsberg.

Its a lot of money, and its very exciting, he said.

The San Bruno Community Foundation will host a series of town hall meetings Monday, May 11, at Capuchino High School, Thursday, March 28, at Belle Air Elementary School and Wednesday, June 3, at the San Bruno Senior Center to solicit suggestions on ways to manage the fund.

The goal of the outreach campaign is not just to hear the most vocal members of the community, but to consider the opinion of all San Bruno residents, Hatamiya said.

Vital signs report: Make your opinion known on community survey this month

May 3, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

A final report will be prepared and the information will be used for further community development.

The project is being taken on by the Alberni Valley Community Foundation as an ongoing initiative launched by the Community Foundations of Canada a number of years ago. The organization encourages community foundations in all cities across the country to undertake the Vital Signs survey and prepare final reports.

Responsible for funding the report, the AVCF will use the results to direct the work they do and where funding will be allocated. The Foundation has contracted research facilitator, Maggie Hodge Kwan to bring the report together.

“This survey will take the temperature of the community as a whole,” Hodge Kwan said.

With the help of Community Foundations of Canada, she has steamlined data and customized the survey specific for Port Alberni. “I researched issues with the municipal government and

stayed on top of what Port Alberni has been talking about.”

The survey has been designed to address the elements of arts and culture, belonging and leadership, environment, the gap between rich and poor, getting started in the community, health, housing, learning, safety and work.

For the Alberni Valley Community Foundation, this will be a document they want to share with the community.
