Lowville Academy establishes educational foundation
Lawrence County, and Lewis County in Northern New York.
LOWVILLE Lowville Academy and Central School has become the second Lewis County district to establish an educational foundation, in conjunction with the Northern New York Community Foundation, to help enhance programs and services at the school.
“We’re excited about it,” District Superintendent Cheryl R. Richardson, the Community Foundation’s executive director, had talked with district officials last fall about forming such a fund.
“Our district has been really involved with the foundation for several years,” she said, noting that several district endowment funds already are administered by the Watertown nonprofit.
On March 9, school board members officially established the educational foundation, although Mrs. Steckly said district officials still will have to set ground rules about how money from the fund is to be spent and how large the fund will have to grow before investment returns may be used.
The Copenhagen Central School District established a similar foundation last month.
The Lowville district has myriad endowment funds that are used primarily for student scholarships handed out at each year’s graduation ceremony.
“We’ve got a history here of very generous alumni,” Mrs. “This is the next natural step in growing that partnership.”
People also may feel free to make small donations to the educational foundation with the knowledge that it “contributes to a larger fund,” Mrs. Steckly said.
