Celebrations at Dingley as its finally moves into new Shaw home | NewburyToday.co.uk

A CHARITY which provides care for children with specialist needs celebrated a milestone occasion last week when it moved into its new home.

West Berkshire Dingley Family and Specialist Early Years Centre is now operating from Shaw Social Club, Poplar Place, and marked the opening last Monday (Feb 23) with a visit from its patron, Lady Catherine Stevenson.

It follows five years of fundraising and land-hunting for a replacement site, after it was required to leave its former home at Newbury Racecourse to make way for the major redevelopment scheme.

Before the charity could move in, however, it had to undergo a 96,000 refurbishment to make it suitable for its needs, with a sensory room, upgraded disabled toilet facilities and a parent room installed, while external garden space was landscaped.

Dingley chairman, Dave Ormrod, said: “After over three years of searching, one abandoned new build project and a very extensive refurbishment of an ex-nursery building, the Dingley West Berkshire Centre finally moved into its new home in Shaw during half term, and opened its doors to our supported children and their families.

“Grants and donations from charitable trusts, local businesses and generous individuals, plus our own fundraising efforts and public funding have enabled us to create wonderful inside and outside spaces that the children will enjoy and treasure for many years to come.

“I would like to thank the owners and trustees of Shaw Social Club for giving us the opportunity to utilise the building within their grounds, and the numerous volunteers who have put the final touches to the extensive refurbishment undertaken.

“We plan to hold a number of events in the near future to celebrate various aspects of this project, so watch this space.”

Parent Lisa Richardson, who has a child which attends the Dingley centre, said: “It is wonderful that the children eventually have a place of their own.

“It makes all the hard work and effort that everyone has put in well worth it just to see the children happy and smiling.”

The charity had been temporarily based at the Phoenix Resource Centre, Newtown Road, after plans to build at the Mencap centre, Enborne Road, fell through in 2013.

Funding for the centre was provided by West Berkshire Council, Englefield Charitable Trust, Greenham Common Trust, Bayer, Wolfson Foundation, Wooden Spoon, Peter Baker Foundation, Vodafone, Rank Foundation, Lloyds Bank Community Foundation and Berkshire Masons.

MADISON – The Madison Education Foundation received a big boost on Feb.

Foundation President Mary Schaenen said the ConnectOne Bank Enrichment Grant will further the work of the Madison Education Foundation, in its mission to award grants to grades K-12 teachers in Madison’s public schools “for initiatives that energize the creative and academic lives of students” but are beyond the reach of the school budget.

Last year, the Madison Education Foundation awarded more than $120,000 in grants, enhancing education for students across all five Madison public schools. In addition, the Foundation Board met in late August to approve a $66,000 grant for a renovation of the Madison High School TV/Video Studio; the foundation is partnering with the school district on this significant project.

“Our partnership with the Madison Education Foundation will enable faculty to have access to critical resources while empowering students of the Madison School District to excel,” Magennis said. “We applaud the Madison Education Foundation’s commitment to making the community of Madison ‘a better place to be’.”

Business leaders in the area who would like to follow ConnectOne Bank’s example and support the work of the Madison Education Foundation are invited to contact Clare Sievers, who handles corporate and foundation partnerships, at sieversc@verizon.net.
