GUEST COMMENTARY: Supporting leadership is a great investment

February 28, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

When you think of all the things that go into making a community great, strong leadership is one of the key components.

It takes strong leaders from business, education, law enforcement, government and the nonprofit sectors to work together to create a community that is welcoming, prosperous, safe, caring, and one that offers a wide range of recreational and cultural activities for all to enjoy.

The Porter County Community Foundation is investing in our nonprofit leaders to help them grow and become more effective. They partner with the Edward Lowe Foundation in Cassopolis, Mich., to provide their nonprofit leaders the same kind of retreat learning experiences that leading for-profit CEOs and entrepreneurs enjoy. In these sessions, the group shares issues and challenges they each may be facing and then they work together to try and develop solutions or strategies to tackle the problem.

The feedback we get from this group on both the retreat and the follow-up sessions has been incredible.

“The retreat was an amazing opportunity to meet with my professional peers”, said Jennifer Wright, CEO of Hilltop Neighborhood House.

Kris Krouse, executive director of Shirley Heinze Land Trust, said, “It was so valuable to be surrounded by exceptional leaders from Porter County, making it a great learning experience.”

We believe this is such an important initiative that we are continuing to schedule annual programs with new and innovative curriculum in addition to continuing the peer learning session support for existing and new groups. At the Porter County Community Foundation, we believe investing in the people in a position to lead their organizations so they can positively impact our communities is just about one of the best investments we can make.

Nonprofits selling access to research data a growing movement

February 28, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

A Wissahickon High student is screened for cardiac issues by Simon’s Fund, a local nonprofit studying sudden cardiac death in children.

Simon’s Fund, the local nonprofit that highlights the dangers of sudden cardiac death in children, has invested about $200,000 to build the first national registry for adolescent hearts. It differs from traditional sources of funding for nonprofits, which most often depend on donations from foundations, corporations, and wealthy individuals.

This form of venture philanthropy garnered attention last year when the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sold its rights to royalties from Kalydeco – a drug that helps about 4 percent of patients with the inherited disorder – for a landmark $3.3 billion.

Eventually, Aurora was acquired in a $600 million deal by Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston, which continued to develop what was then called VX-770 and in 2012 won regulatory approval to market the drug.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation still owned the rights, which it sold two years later – for a record gain on investment by a health nonprofit – to Royalty Pharma in New York, which buys intellectual property and other rights to drugs.

National nonprofits involved in venture philanthropy include the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; the disease is now called type 1 diabetes).

Though experts agree venture philanthropy is likely the wave of the future, some harbor concerns about ethical conflicts that could arise from the investments.

“I do see this as a trend,” said Arthur Caplan, director of medical ethics at NYU’s Langone Medical Center. But remember that the odds of making it from mice to the pharmacy shelf is 40- to 50-to-one.”

Caplan notes that, as business partners, nonprofits may be investing with entities whose goals include helping patients but who are in it mainly to make money.

“Another question for nonprofits is privatizing research: how much to spend on research and how much on services for current patients. Kalydeco (generic name: ivacaftor) costs $300,000 a year and must be taken for life.

Though insurance and drug companies pick up much of the tab, some have questioned why a drug funded with nonprofit investment is not more reasonably priced.

“Patients may say, ‘A lot of money is coming back to the foundation, but that doesn’t help me,’ ” Caplan said.

Still, Rosqueta sees venture philanthropy as a good example of investments that yield positive social impact.

“Change has always been achieved between the private, philanthropic, public, and commercial sectors,” she said.
