LEE COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: Honorees exemplify caring, giving

February 28, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

Dean Kesler was voted Man of the Year by the Lee County Community Foundation for “exemplifying the spirit of Sanford and Lee County.” Virginia Hester was voted Woman of the Year by the Lee County Community Foundation for “exemplifying the spirit of Sanford and Lee County.” Dean Kesler nor Virginia Hester were born in Sanford, but from the moment they both arrived, they dedicated their lives to improving the city in any way they could.

For that reason, the Lee County Community Foundation has named Kesler and Hester its Man and Woman of the Year for 2015.

Bokhoven said Kesler and Hester both were easy choices for the award, and that both had given freely of themselves to leave Lee County better than they had found it.

Upon arriving in Lee County, Kesler made it his mission to give as much of himself as he was able to the community.

Kesler, honored to be named the LCCF’s 2015 Man of the Year, said he respected the work the organization does in Lee County.

‘A promoter of Sanford’

In fact, it was Hester’s modesty, along with her passion for making Lee County as bright and attractive as possible, that made her such an obvious candidate for the award.

Hester taught high school for seven years after moving to Sanford, and she maintains that guiding young people is one of the most gratifying things she has ever experienced.

But Hester always enjoyed watching Sanford and its residents grow and change with the times, and she is convinced that if the community can come together, the city will thrive.

Bringing Succour To The World Through Philanthropy

How soon many forget that our wealth becomes someone else’s when we are, no more.
It is an undisputable fact that a number of significant wealthy billionaires bestride the Nigeria socio-political space like a colossus. While this writer is not in any way opposed to how wealthy individuals should spend or use their wealth, they in fact should in whatever way they deem appropriate, yet it is known that this wealth is usually amassed at the expense of the very mass of the poor. Today’s billionaires cannot take away the importance of the millions of people around the world who serve as potential clients of the products they sell, one which ultimately adds monetary value to the pockets of big business corporations owned by these billionaire’s. Without ‘us’ there cannot be ‘them’ and so when an individual becomes wealthy through the people, it is expedient and mostly imperative for the latter to do same by giving back to that society in many ways.
Rather than engage in charity works, what a number of our billionaires in this part of the, world does is to keep accumulating wealth and do it at the expense of wealth itself. Such accumulated wealth becomes so huge that it turns out to be our worst nightmare that we begin to fear the next man who we think has an evil intent even when such fear is unwarranted.
There is a growing movement today which has taken up the banner of social justice and ultimately sparked a golden age of philanthropy unseen since the days of Rockefeller, carnegie and Morgan. This is simply to help fight a number of causes around the world.
Back to Nigeria, one can hardly hear of such pretty initiatives pioneered by our wealthy class, unlike most Americans who share the desire to help their fellow man, the wealthy class in Nigeria see this as an uncharitable venture. This writer, after a brief research, recently discovered that a paltry number of foundations set up by our wealthy class exist today in Nigeria.

Hearts for Hope fundraising dances to a record beat

February 28, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

LAUREL No doubt about it, the 2015 Hearts for Hope Dinner Dance was entertaining -and one for the record book.

Attendance was a first-ever sellout and a record amount of money was raised through ticket sales, auction items and fundraising dance competition during Saturday night’s event that benefits the non-profit Laurel Community Foundation’s two temporary/transitional housing facilities Hope House I & II.

In fact, nearly $12,000 was generated by Dancing with the Stars fundraising alone. That amount not even counting ticket revenue, auction proceeds or sponsor donations surpassed the entire amount raised at any previous Hearts for Hope events.

“The total I am looking at here is greater than we have actually made on the entire project in times past,” said Master of Ceremonies Dennis O’Neal in announcing the Dancing with the Stars winner. That is far and beyond any record that we had before.”

“We’ve taken this thing to a whole new level,” said John Shwed, Mayor of Laurel and president of the Laurel Community Foundation, which operates and maintains the two Hope House facilities.

As he boldly predicted in fun-filled chatter on social media, Josh Wharton and his dance partner Lisa Horsey drew the most fundraising support there were over 350 attendees and each received one free vote; additional votes were $1 apiece. Horsey said that not only is the Hearts for Hope a fun event, it helps raise awareness to community need.

“I think we need more awareness,” she said.

Hope House provides transitional housing for homeless families.

One serious Southwest Florida asset

February 28, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

As the lifeblood of our community, environment, and economy, water is a cause that has captured the attention of the region.

In February, the Southwest Florida Community Foundation hosted John Moranas The Springs Eternal Project Exhibition aFloridaas Fragile Fountains of Youth,a documenting the beauty, history and increasing ecological devastation of Floridaas springs and aquifer.

What was clear is that our waters are part of an ecosystem that connects us all.

The Springs Eternal Project showcased photojournalist and nature photographer Moranas 20-plus-year journey photographing and documenting Floridaas treasured springs. As conveners around regional issues and lovers of SWFLas unique environment, we believe there is a role for our foundation to play in improving and protecting our waters.

Beginning in the fall of 2013, the foundation held four water roundtable discussions with environmentalists, developers, policy-makers and technocrats from across the region to explore the problem. A common topic that surfaced among these community leaders was the lack of unity around a common message from the region about how to address our water problems.

A unified message could result in additional assistance and opportunity for the region to drive real solutions to protect this precious resource.

On July 8, 2014, the Southwest Florida Community Foundation sent the first of two letters to the Army Corps of Engineers with a unified message from 24 individuals representing local governments and organizations from across the region.
