Grant Purpose - This grant to the Flint Institute of Arts will sponsor two exhibitions of comic book art. Comics, Heroes, and American Visual Culture will feature more than 80 original drawings and paintings by some of the most well-known contributors to the comic book and comic strip genres. "Beyond the Frame: African-American Comic Book Artists" will present the work of several well-established, as well as emerging, African-American artists working in commercial, self-published, and Web-based comic book and graphic novel art. These two unique exhibitions of comic book, comic strip, and graphic novel art will be presented in the Hodge Gallery from January 24 through April 26, 2009.
