Grants help wider community Republican American
The Toledo Community Foundation was recognized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development with a Secretary’s Award this month for its cross-sector partnerships between the philanthropic and public sectors.
“We were thrilled,” said Keith Burwell, Toledo Community Foundation president.
To secure investments, the foundation started the Overland Initiative, a long-term, place-based initiative to build resident leadership capacity and revitalize the neighborhood around the new park.
HUD’s goal is to recognize the partnership process and its impact as a community strategy to increase the quality of life for low and moderate-income residents nationwide.
Since its founding in 1973, the Toledo Community Foundation has provided philanthropic services for individuals, families, businesses, and corporations to meet their charitable giving needs.
In 2014, the foundation partnered with the Toledo-Lucas County Sustainability Commission to obtain a Partners for Places grant from the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities to pursue resident-directed projects that activate the regional sustainability plan in the neighborhood.
“We’re doing this for the community in partnership with the department of neighborhoods, the county, and over 30 nonprofit agencies,” Mr. var title = “Nonprofit wins for revamp of Jeep site “; var description = “The revitalization of the former Jeep plant site into the Overland Industrial Park has led to an award for a local organization. WV MetroNews Organization will seek grants to improve public health
BUCKHANNON, W.Va. A new grantmaking foundation in Upshur County is hoping to provide area non-profit organizations with increased resources to help combat some of the area’s biggest public health issues.
Paul Daugherty, President & CEO of Philanthropy West Virginia, Inc., said the new Pallotine Foundation of Buckhannon, West Virginia will be seeking applications from worthy 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in Barbour, Lewis, Randolph, Upshur, and Webster counties.
“Using the resources of that cell to create a permanent endowment for the region with a health focus is just a tremendous addition,” he said. It’s a wonderful new addition for the region.”
Some issues the foundation hopes to address through their programs include prenatal care, diabetes prevention, oral hygiene, and hunger.
The organization’s funding priorities will include health & wellness, leadership development, lifestyle education, and spiritual and pastoral care.
“Those types of issues are very critical to them in their interest area of putting investments to provide that basic assistance and service in a part of the state that doesn’t have that many philanthropic resources,” Daugherty said.
Daugherty said he was excited to see what the organization could bring to an often underserved region of the state.
“It is a wonderful blend of both the need in the region as well as the long-term commitment of the Pallotine Sisters by having St.
For the players who inhabit it, a baseball locker room is a special, almost sacred place. So much more than a place to change clothes and store gear, a locker room is a gathering place where only the players and team personnel are typically allowed, and anyone outside of the team is clearly designated a visitor. It’s a place for the members of the team to hang out and watch TV and get to know each other, just as it’s a place for open discussion and mediation of conflict among team members. The Seattle University baseball team is 24-14 overall and 11-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, angling for its first NCAA regional berth since 1954, and appreciates the value of a locker room more than most of its NCAA Division I brethren. The Redhawks have only had one of their own for a year and a half.”It’s a huge deal, and I really can’t over-state how important it is for us to have a locker room,” said Seattle senior right-hander and former Shorecrest star Ted Hammond, a top starter on the best pitching staff in the Western Athletic Conference and a leading voice in that locker room. “It’s great that all of the guys can get together even if we’re not getting ready for a game.”The construction of the locker room in the Connolly Complex, along with the turfing of the Redhawks’ home field at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, increased buy-in from players and coaches and continued support from boosters, have coincided with the steady improvement of the program since coach Donny Harrel resurrected Seattle baseball in 2010.The team’s win total has increased in each of the last three full seasons, from 21 in 2013 to 26 in 2014 and 31 in 2015.With Harrel’s steady hand on the tiller and the performance and leadership of local players like Hammond, redshirt senior right-hander Grant Gunning and redshirt sophomore right-hander Austin Hansen, the Redhawks are tied with Sacramento State atop the WAC and earned their first victory over neighboring Washington since 2014 on April 19.Hammond, Gunning and Hansen have guided the Seattle pitching staff to a team earned run average of 3.39, tops in the WAC. Seattle had two chances to beat Cal State Bakersfield in the finals of the WAC’s double elimination conference tournament, but surrendered leads in the eighth inning or later in both games.Success in the conference tournament is paramount for Seattle, as the WAC has been a one-bid league in each of the past three seasons.”After literally being a pitch away last season, I definitely think that has impacted this year’s success,” Hansen said.In one of the team’s first meetings this fall, Hammond stood in front of his teammates in their remodeled locker room and declared that history would not repeat itself, and that the Redhawks would not feel the way they felt after those two losses again.Making a regional would not only validate the combined 12 years that Hammond, Gunning and Hansen have given to the Seattle baseball program, but the university’s decision to revive the program.”When I was a freshman it seemed so unrealistic,” Hammond said of making the NCAA tournament.

KUSA – A new grant is helping the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office put a full-time prosecutor at Ralston House child advocacy centers to help with cases before they go to court.
The 18-month grant for $284,511 comes from Children’s Justice Act funds through the Colorado State Department of Human Services.
Pinwheel gardens are sprouting in Colorado in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month through the month of April. The prosecutor will work with forensic interviewers, detectives and social services in cases at the start of the investigation instead of coming in partway through.
“It’s important to understand when we’re talking about child victims, there’s not one of these cases that isn’t important,” said Deputy District Attorney Christian Gardner-Wood.
Gardner-Wood is the newest member of the Ralston House. Each marble represents one child.
District Attorney Weir hopes to continue the program past the current 18-month grant and to one day expand the program to the elder abuse unit.
