Foundation grants help fund Lincoln funeral train, more

April 29, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

CHARLESTON — Help to bring “a unique opportunity” to the Charleston community joined the traditional classroom materials and projects that received grants from the Charleston school district’s Excellence in Education Foundation.

Grants the foundation recently awarded included $5,000, the group’s largest grant amount, to help fund the appearance of the replica Abraham Lincoln funeral train scheduled to be at the Coles County Fairgrounds next week.

Jefferson Elementary school sixth-grade teacher Pam Evans applied for and received the grant and noted there are times set aside for school groups to view the train during its Tuesday-Thursday visit.

The train is re-creating the trip that took Lincoln’s body from Washington, D.C. But the foundation was willing to award a grant for the Lincoln funeral train because it will benefit several students and the community, board member Jackie Goddard said.

“We’re always looking for those grants that stand out and make a difference to the most people,” she said.

Goodard also said the foundation board is excited about the projects the grants will fund. She said she wants to encourage more teachers to apply for grants and the size of the project doesn’t matter.

The foundation’s other grants this year went to:

Jodi Cline, teacher in the district’s gifted student program, $2,443.40 for computer coding equipment.

Cline said the grant will go to buy credit-card-sized computers called “Raspberry Pi” along with monitors and keyboards. They’ll be able to write in one book at school, take another home and donate a third to a community service project, she said.

It was “such an awakening” at the start of the school year to hear that many of her students didn’t like to read and write, Larson said. The students have “grown over time” and now many of them write for fun, she said.

Holly Pantle, media specialist, and Chris Bily, social studies teacher, Charleston Middle School, $1,032.70 for materials on World War I.

“We wanted to provide students with some sources from the period,” Pantle said.

Erie cancer center to receive half of Kanzius Foundation money

April 29, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

The Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation will soon distribute more than $1 million to three cancer-treatment facilities, including the Regional Cancer Center.

An Erie County judge and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office have approved the foundation’s dissolution plans to give the remainder of its assets to these facilities. The money is to be used for human trials of the Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Device.

“These funds are specifically to go for patient care, to assist the patient during the treatment and beyond,” said Maryann Yochim, president of the foundation’s board of directors. “It’s not to be used to purchase the equipment.”

People donated more than $10 million to the Erie-based nonprofit, which raised money for research involving the late Millcreek Township inventor’s cancer-treatment device.

The foundation closed its doors June 30 after officials announced it has funded all the research needed on the device to take it to human trials.

Court documents show that the foundation’s assets of $1,050,000 will be divided in the following way:

– $250,000 will go to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and $250,000 will go to the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation in Fort Myers, Fla., to be used to create John Kanzius Human Trial Funds at each facility for the administration of human trials of the Kanzius device.

– The rest of the assets — as much as $550,000 — will go to the Erie Community Foundation, which will create a similar fund through which money will be distributed to the Regional Cancer Center and other qualified entities for the administration of human trials of the Kanzius device.

“More of the money is going to Erie because this was an Erie-based foundation. It started here,” Yochim said.

RCC officials said they have not heard anything new about the funding for Kanzius human trials.

“When the Kanzius device receives the necessary FDA approvals and completes a successful Phase I trial period, (the) RCC will be prepared to incorporate its use into our ongoing clinical research activities,” RCC spokeswoman Tricia Gottlieb said in an e-mail.

Curley said Baylor will use the money to hire a dedicated research nurse to be certain all patients in the Kanzius human trials are properly evaluated, consented, and followed.

“All patient data must be properly collected and de-identified to protect patient privacy, then the results are turned over to the FDA,” Curley said in an e-mail. It is critically important that all patient data is collected and protected in a proper fashion and that all data is reported accurately.”

If the Food and Drug Administration does not approve the Kanzius device for human trials or it doesn’t reach Stage II within five years, the money will be distributed for cancer research.

Erie County Judge Elizabeth Kelly approved the foundation’s plans April 21.

Timeless photographs inspire Kleinhans archive room

Clotilde Dedecker, the current President of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, jumped at the chance to bid on the book when she discovered it at an auction in New York City.

Wednesday, the Community Foundation announced that the photo album — containing more than 200, 1930s-era images of the clothes that were on display at Kleinhans — would have a home at the music hall.

“And, as part of that, the Community Foundation will be funding a new archive room here at Kleinhans Music Hall, and this photo album of the windows of Kleinhans Department store will be the first gift to the new archive room,” Dedecker said.

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo will be giving a $75,000 grant to Kleinhans Music Hall for this restoration project, in conjunction with the Hall’s 75th anniversary.

Set to open in September, the archive room will preserve this part of Western New York’s past for the future yet to come.

Since 2012, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has invested approximately

$3.5 million into the local economies of Southwest Florida and its surrounding environs. The collaboration with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation was introduced to make the grants competitive and cross a wide range of services of need to the local population.

“We feel honored to work with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation as it continues its legacy of giving in Southwest Florida,” says Sarah Owen, president and CEO of the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.

Clinton charity never provided donor data

WASHINGTON An unprecedented ethics promise that played a pivotal role in helping Hillary Rodham Clinton win confirmation as secretary of state, soothing senators’ concerns about conflicts of interests with Clinton family charities, was uniformly bypassed by the biggest of the philanthropies involved.

The Clinton Health Access Initiative
never submitted information on any foreign donations to State Department lawyers for review during Clinton’s tenure from 2009 to 2013, Maura Daley, the organization’s spokeswoman, acknowledged to the Globe this week. 21, 2009.

The memorandum, which did not outline a penalty for failing to comply, was signed in December 2008 by Valerie Jarrett, co-chairwoman of the Obama transition team, and Bruce Lindsey, a longtime Clinton aide who at the time was CEO of the Clinton Foundation and sits on the board of the CHAI.

Jarrett and Lindsey declined to be interviewed about CHAI’s repeated failures to disclose major increases in foreign grants.

The White House and the State Department also declined to take a firm stand on the apparent violations of the agreement. The State Department believes that transparency is the critical element of that agreement,” said Alec Gerlach, a Kerry spokesman.

With a budget of more than $100 million a year, the CHAI makes up nearly 60 percent of the broader Clinton charitable empire, which includes the Clinton Foundation and several offshoots. The interesting part is you would think that for all of their time in the White House and time in the Senate, that she would want to be very far away from the hint of this kind of problem.”

Dan Diller, a member of the committee’s Republican staff when Clinton was confirmed, said it was difficult to comprehend why the Boston charity didn’t disclose its foreign grants to the State Department.

“If it is just a pass through to do good works that the whole world is cheering, then what could possibly be the harm in disclosing the donations?” The phrase “Clinton Foundation” came up by name 75 times during Clinton’s confirmation hearing demonstrating the significant concerns among lawmakers about potential conflicts of interest and a need for transparency.

At the hearing, then-Senator Clinton batted down questions by pointing to the highly specific contents of the agreement and the broad pledges for disclosure.

The agreement said the Clinton charities and the Obama administration wanted to “ensure that the activites of the [Clinton Foundation and its affiliated organizations], however beneficial, do not create conflicts or the appearance of conflicts for Senator Clinton as secretary of state.”

All donors were required to be disclosed. But it required that Clinton charities disclose to the State Department when foreign nations “increase materially” their commitments to the charities. Magaziner has said that the charity didn’t publicly disclose its donors because it believed the broader Clinton Foundation was doing so; there is considerable overlap in givers to the two entities.

Among the foreign governments that started giving money to the charity while Clinton was secretary of state were Rwanda, Sweden, Papua New Guinea, and Flanders.

Lucas family and foundation give scholarships

April 29, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

Wednesday evening, the Lucas family kept their son’s memory alive by awarding scholarships at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

This is the 11th year for the ceremony that remembers Al Lucas.

Lucas died in an arena football league game in 2005.

He was a Northeast High School standout, a Troy State All-American, and played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A community foundation and the Lucas family hand out scholarships every spring to high school seniors that attend public school in Macon-Bibb.

Chimaka Nwokeocha says her family is from Nigeria, she plans to go to Emory and says the scholarship means a lot.

“It’s one of my first scholarships so far and, I mean, being an athlete, it’s hard work, and even though I”m not a captain or the best player, I still do my best and work hard and stay committed,” she said with a smile.

Seven seniors each received a $1,000 check this evening.

Since the scholarship program began, they’ve given out $76,000.
