BAY CITY, MI — Imagination Station is no more.

The community-built playground in Veterans Memorial Park on Bay City’s West Side was taken down this week by city crews. City officials originally thought it would require a company versed in removing contaminated materials, but Baranski said city crews are likely going to handle it.

“Essentially, we started digging up a lot of compost and wood chips and we now think we can scrape it out ourselves and haul it to the landfill,” Baranski said.

With the city handling the work, an estimated $50,000 cost approved by the City Commission last week should be “significantly lower,” Baranski added. They pointed to liability issues with the existing play structure, including its proximity to the ball diamonds at Vets Park and environmental issues with the pressure-treated wood used to build it that ultimately contaminated the soil.

The city is partnering with the Bay Area Community Foundation to see a new playground built that would be called “Imagination Station” or “Imagination Station 2.”

Two up for top citizen of Maple Ridge – Maple Ridge News

One of two candidates will be announced as the Maple Ridge citizen of the year on Thursday.

Maria Raynolds and Diane Stadel were both nominated by the Maple Ridge Community Foundation, which sponsors the award, recognizing dedicated individuals who have made outstanding volunteer contributions to enhance the quality of life in Maple Ridge or enhance the image of the city in the areas of arts, culture, athletics, social service or business.

Raynolds has played a strong leadership role in Maple Ridge, aspiring others to take action through her own dedication to finding solutions to the many challenges in our society, according to the community foundation.

She has many causes dear to her heart, including the Golden Ears Gogos group supporting the important work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign in Africa. She is tireless in pursuit of projects that will further the cause.

While Raynolds was a director at the CEED Centre, serving as president for two years, she was instrumental in reviving the Celebrate Earth Day festival, creating the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Environmental Council and contributing to community and school neighbourhood gardens.

She has been a member of the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society for more than 20 years and served on the board of directors on and off throughout the years. Stadel has supported a number of outreach activities to improve the circumstances of people in Maple Ridge through support of the Friends in Need Food Bank and or similar agencies.

The Citizen of the Year award will be announced at 9 a.m. Thursday, at Meadow Gardens Golf Club.

The Maple Ridge Community Foundation provides ways for people to give to causes that matter in Maple Ridge through the generosity of donors.

The Community Foundation for Greater Rome Board of Directors includes Executive Director Ashley Ellington (seated, from left), Joel Snider, Buster Wright, Janice Davis, John Bennett (standing, from left), Wright Bagby, Mike Mathis, Jimmy Byars, Ed Hine and Ed Watters.

A group of Rome community leaders has brought many years of discussion to fruition with the incorporation of the Community Foundation for Greater Rome.

What separates the Community Foundation of Rome from the United Way is that donations are put into an endowment and only the interest earned would be used for special contributions to needy agencies.

Snider, pastor of First Baptist Church in Rome, said the United Way is like a communityas checkbook while a community foundation is more like a savings account.

Bennett, who retired last year after 30 years as Romeas city manager, said at least 20 communities across Georgia have a community foundation. With the Community Foundation of Rome is place, he said, something like Rome Kares would not have to be created from scratch.
