Philanthropy fund gives €8m to national child support plan

April 13, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

The Child and Family Agency has announced a major programme of early intervention measures for children after it received over 8m in one-off Atlantic Philanthropies funding.

Children’s Minister James Reilly said the money would mean “a stronger focus on prevention and early intervention rather than crisis management”.

The prevention, partnership, and family support programme will begin this year and will run into 2018 courtesy of a non-discretionary grant of 8.3m from Atlantic Philanthropies and supported by the Unesco Child and Family Research Centre at NUI Galway.

A central plank of the programme will be the national rollout of Meitheal a model for family support led by Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, which allows children, young people, and their families to get supports locally when needed through a range of statutory and non-statutory agencies.

A grant will be given to EPIC (Empowering Young People in Care) to create a structured process around consultation with young people, while a participation strategy and a children and young people’s version of the strategy have been drafted and will be published later this month.

Robin Martin, team leader of the Magic Garden Project Ministry Team, accepted the award on behalf of the Magic Garden, which is a community garden joint effort with the Joseph United Methodist Church and Joseph Charter School. The commercial kitchen will be located in the church.

The Magic Garden plans a variety of community uses for its planned commercial kitchen, including a “Friday Soup Kitchen” for the benefit of financially struggling families.

The grant application stated that current commercial kitchen availability in the county is expensive and inadequate.

The Magic Garden had counted on acquiring a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust, but MMT is currently in hiatus while reorganizing the program. Magic Garden is also currently working on smaller grants, Martin said.

Sue Coppin, large grant chair for the Soroptimists, expressed pleasure at her organization’s opportunity to help fund the kitchen.

Community Foundation: Everyone has something to give

Donate to We Care of Grundy County where low-income Grundy County residents get to shop for free once a month.

On a side note, I want everyone to understand most places that charge for goods do so to support a larger mission such as a job training center, soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or shelter for women and children.

Speaking of spring cleaning: Have you come across an excess of towels and blankets that are outdated or wearing thin in some places?

If you choose to give to this area, please give to a reputable organization.

They have been listing some of them on local news stations, but we at the Community Foundation know of some foundations in DeKalb County that are accepting financial donations and would be happy to provide you with that information.

Perhaps you are someone who would rather give locally. After the floods in early 2013 and tornado in late 2013, several organizations came together to begin a disaster fund with the purpose of disbursing financial support to Grundy County major disaster victims quickly.

There now is a permanent Disaster Fund at the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

An anonymous panel of local and out-of-town experts chooses fund recipients.

Wendy Guillies, acting president of the Kauffman Foundation, said digital inclusion has been an important study area for the foundation and is essential to metro-area growth.

There’s no quick fix, Guillies said, but “we also know that the answer lies with the individuals and organizations already working in the community.”

The local grant recipients :

ArtsTech, which trains high school students at Hogan Academy and senior citizens, focusing on spreading computer skills in the Kansas City’s Blue Hills and Town Fork Creek neighborhoods.

Connecting for Good, which offers computer classes and refurbished computers to its class graduates, particularly in northeast Wyandotte County and neighborhoods east of Troost Avenue in Kansas City.

The Hispanic Economic Development Corp., which sponsors computer classes in English and Spanish in seven locations, including its West Side Kansas City base.

The Kansas City Public Library, which is developing a permanent training space in the Central Library and developing a community outreach program.

Trinity Community Church and the Shepherd’s Center, which offer technology classes to seniors and Spanish speakers in Kansas City, Kan.

Literacy Kansas City, a new grant recipient this year, which is providing digital skills classes at four locations across the metro area.

Carrie Coogan, executive director at Literacy Kansas City, said digital fluency was a vital part of modern literacy.

Melinda Clark: Scholarships limited

As the mom of a graduating senior, I am delighted by the many local scholarships that reflect our community’s investment in and value for our young people and their futures.

So if you are one of the kind, generous benefactors who are offering college funds to local youth, may I ask you to take a second look at the criteria listed on your scholarship form, whether it’s offered through Yampa Valley Community Foundation or the Steamboat Springs High School, and to consider whether you would be willing to offer your scholarship community-wide?

Broadening the parameters may not be in line with the funding priorities of all 80-plus local scholarships that our community offers. But if the limitations were simply a matter of not realizing that the default option excluded some seniors, this is a chance to consider whether next year’s seniors from all over our community could have access to more than 10 percent of the local scholarships.
