Math misplacement: Tech should support legislation to stop it

May 6, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

The study found that flawed math placement practices in nine Bay Area school districts forced many of these students to repeat math courses they had already taken, even though they had passed standardized tests and/or earned a “B” grade or better in the course.

The result is a future in which technology companies face a problem larger than a lack of workforce diversity–the inability to find enough local, skilled employees to remain globally competitive.

School districts can help eliminate math misplacement and ensure students have an opportunity to excel in mathematics by adopting fair, objective and transparent math placement policies. And in most cases, this solution requires only a firm will to make it happen, as districts that have tackled the math

misplacement issue have done so with existing resources.

Valley Community Foundation“>Silicon Valley Community Foundation is leading the way to address math misplacement, working with 22 Bay Area school districts to help them adopt and implement fair, objective and transparent math placement policies.

Though the Womenas Care Center raised more than any single charity across the nation in Tuesdayas Give Local campaign a a whopping $454,980 a President Ann Manion recalls a time when awe werenat sure we wanted to dive into this May 5th thing.a

But Give Local did mean a lot of hard, consistent publicity for some of the nonprofits who took part Tuesday, causing the St. Joseph County event to be one of the top finishers among about 50 Give Local campaigns across the country, including big cities like New Orleans and Sacramento.

1 in the nation until late Wednesday morning, when the Give Local America website added dollars to a South Carolina community listed as aCoastal,a pushing it to first place with almost $7.2 million.

But, even on Wednesday, there was a roughly $51,000 discrepancy between the grand total taken in by area nonprofits on the local and on the national websites, thanks to local donors whoad mistakenly given more than they intended online (by an extra a0a, for example), which took a while to rectify on the national site, said Laura Moran Walton, communications director of the Community Foundation of St.

Late on Tuesday, the local leader board at GiveLocalSJC.org had zoomed upwards from nearly $4 million to about $6.7 million as organizers at the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County had been working on its Give Local campaign for months, putting the word out through volunteer groups, churches, supportive businesses and others on its mailing list a and asking students to put it on social media, said Director Jim Williams.

The South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestras finished well, with $216,457, thanks to a six-figure gift from the local Georgina Joshi Foundation, honoring the familyas daughter, whoad played and served as concert master. Director Diane Persin Economakis said she knew a few weeks ago that the foundation would be donating as part of Give Local day but didnat know how much until more recently.

The Orcas Island Community Foundation (OICF) is a small but mighty foundation. It has freed up our staff time to do the real work of our Foundation building philanthropy to meet community need. All with an FTE of two.

Having a fully integrated program has allowed us to launch a Grants Catalog (www.giveorcas.org) which expands our annual grant making to the entire community and leverages our discretionary grant dollars significantly. What a gift.
